How to Get a Poppy in Survival Mode

In Survival mode, you just need to find a poppy flower growing naturally and break it. Here’s how:

Finding Poppies

Poppies spawn in pretty much any grassy biome. Walk around plains, forests, or meadows and you’ll see them. They’re the red flowers, so they’re easy to spot.

Breaking the Flower

Just break the flower like you’d break any plant:

  • Java Edition: Left click and hold
  • Pocket Edition: Tap and hold
  • Console (Xbox/PS): Hold RT (Xbox) or R2 (PS)
  • Nintendo Switch: Hold ZR
  • Windows 10 Edition: Left click and hold

The flower breaks instantly and drops a poppy item on the ground.

Picking It Up

Walk over the poppy to add it to your inventory. That’s it. Pretty straightforward.

What You Can Make With Poppies

Poppies aren’t super rare or valuable, but they’re useful:

  • Red Dye: Poppies turn into red dye. Useful for coloring wool, concrete, and other blocks.
  • Suspicious Stew: You can craft it with mushrooms for food or buff effects.

Red dye is probably the main reason you’d want to collect them.

Things to Do With Poppies

  • Decorate: Plant them in pots or place them on the ground for decoration.
  • Breed Bees: Bees are attracted to flowers, including poppies. Use them to attract and breed bees.
  • Compost: Throw poppies in a composter for a small chance of increasing compost level.
