Oak Hanging Signs are a decoration and navigation block added in Minecraft 1.20. Unlike regular signs, these hang from ceilings or the undersides of blocks, which gives you a lot more placement flexibility. One craft yields 6 signs, so they’re cheap to mass-produce once you have the materials.
Where to Find Oak Hanging Sign in Creative Mode
In Java Edition, Oak Hanging Signs sit in the Functional Blocks tab of the Creative Inventory.

Required Materials
To craft a batch of Oak Hanging Signs you need:
- 6 Stripped Oak Logs
- 2 Chains
Strip Oak Logs with any axe by right-clicking them. Chains are crafted from iron nuggets and an iron ingot (in a vertical line), or you can find them in bastion remnants and mineshafts.
How to Craft an Oak Hanging Sign in Survival Mode
1. Open the Crafting Table
Right-click a crafting table to open the 3×3 crafting grid.
2. Arrange the Materials
Place items in this exact pattern:
- Row 1: Chain, (empty), Chain
- Row 2: Stripped Oak Log, Stripped Oak Log, Stripped Oak Log
- Row 3: Stripped Oak Log, Stripped Oak Log, Stripped Oak Log
Chains go in the first and third slots of the top row only. The six stripped oak logs fill the entire second and third rows. Get that top row wrong and nothing will appear in the output slot.
3. Move to Inventory
Drag the 6 Oak Hanging Signs into your inventory.
