Nether Utils Mod 1.12.2 flips your Minecraft experience on its head by letting you start your world directly in the Nether instead of the Overworld. You’ll spawn on a small platform and have to build your way up using custom blocks and mechanics designed specifically for nether survival.
Main Features
Starting Platform
When you create a new world with this mod installed, you’ll spawn on a 5×5 platform in the Nether instead of the Overworld. The mod forces your respawn in the Nether even if you die, so you’re committed to the challenge. Disabling this is easy through the config file if you change your mind.
Soul Soil Farming
Soul soil lets you farm in the Nether without water. Till soul sand with a stone hoe or better, then hydrate it with lava instead of water. This gives you a way to grow food and crops without leaving the Nether early on.
Custom Portal System
The mod replaces the vanilla Nether portal with a custom pedestal and portal block system. You’ll need to gather specific items, place them in pedestals around the portal, and fuel it with water (or change the fuel type in config). Once activated, the portal teleports you to a safe platform in the Overworld.
Nether Trees
Three types of trees spawn naturally in the Nether, each with unique drops. Hell trees give ghast tears, ash trees drop glowstone, and soul trees produce forbidden fruit (which gives random potion effects when eaten). These trees are your main source of wood and special items.
Tank and Obelisk Blocks
Tanks hold up to 4 buckets of liquid and can be carried with you. When filled with 3000 mB of water, they function like hydrated farmland. Obelisks work like beds in the Nether (without explosions) and set your spawn point when placed.
Achievement System
The mod includes new advancements that unlock over time. Some of these are required to craft and use the custom portal system to escape the Nether, adding progression and goals to your playthrough.
How to Install
This mod requires Minecraft Forge and the TerraCore mod as a dependency.
- Install Minecraft Forge for version 1.12.2
- Install TerraCore
- Download the mod file below
- Place the mod file in your .minecraft/mods folder
- Launch the game

Compatibility
Nether Utils works with most other mods that don’t conflict with Nether spawning or portal mechanics. If you want the lush biomes shown in the mod’s screenshots, install Biomes O’ Plenty and select their custom world type when creating a new world.
You can view all crafting recipes in-game by installing Just Enough Items (Forge) or Roughly Enough Items (Fabric).
