Natural Absorption Mod 1.16.5 & 1.12.2

Natural Absorption is a small mod that gives you a permanent shield layer that regenerates over time. If you’ve ever felt like armor wasn’t cutting it or vanilla health regen was too forgiving, this mod fills that gap. Your absorption health regenerates outside of combat and can be boosted through enchantments and infusion.

How Natural Absorption Works

When you spawn, you start with two yellow hearts (by default) stacked on top of your regular health. This is your absorption health, and it’s always hit first when you take damage. Fall damage is the only exception, falling out of the world bypasses your shield.

Every time you take damage, your shield breaks and enters a cooldown period (10 seconds by default). Once the timer runs out, it starts regenerating automatically. The default regen rate is about 1 heart per second, but you can adjust everything in the config file.

Absorption Health Stacking

Your natural absorption stacks with absorption from potions and golden apples. The mod tweaks absorption potions to increase your maximum natural absorption instead of being a one-time effect, so your regeneration works with them too. This makes golden apple buffs actually useful again since they now regenerate with the rest of your shield.

Armor Enchantment

You can enchant armor pieces with the Absorption enchantment to increase your maximum shield health. Any armor in your inventory counts toward this bonus when equipped. There’s also an optional armor replacement mode in the config that converts armor defense entirely into absorption, though this is disabled by default.

Increasing Your Maximum Absorption

You can permanently boost your maximum absorption health through infusion using a Book of Absorption. The process takes two steps.

Step 1: Craft a Book of Absorption

The default recipe surrounds a book with eight golden apples on a crafting table. That’s a lot of apples, but the mod gives you other recipe options in the config file if you want to tweak the cost.

Recipe Options (by recipe ID):

• 0 – No recipe. Books won’t be craftable.
• 1 – Simple (shapeless): 1 apple + 8 gold ingots
• 2 – Easy: 4 apples + 32 gold ingots
• 3 – Default: 8 apples + 64 gold ingots
• 4 – Medium (shapeless): 1 apple + 72 gold ingots
• 5 – Hard: 4 apples + 288 gold ingots
• 6 – Ridiculous: 8 apples + 576 gold ingots

Step 2: Use the Book to Infuse Yourself

Right-click the Book of Absorption while holding it. The mod will consume the book and your experience levels (default: 30 levels required). In return, you get a permanent boost to your max absorption health, typically 2 hearts, and your current absorption instantly tops up by that amount.

Death Penalty

Dying costs you 2 hearts of maximum absorption health (by default). The mod won’t let the penalty drop you below 4 hearts of max absorption though, so your starting 2 hearts plus your first book’s boost are safe. After that, each death undoes one book infusion.

Configuration

Natural Absorption generates a properties file in your config folder when you first load it. From there, you can adjust almost everything: starting absorption, max absorption, regen rate, cooldown duration, death penalty, enchantment availability, and more. You can even disable the enchantment entirely or use the mod purely as a buff to absorption potions if you want.

Installation

Natural Absorption works with both Forge and Fabric. Install your mod loader for your Minecraft version, then drop the mod jar file into your mods folder (.minecraft/mods). Restart the game and you’re done.
