How to Summon a Spider in Minecraft

Learn how to summon spiders in Minecraft using the /summon command. Works in Java Edition 1.8+. Step-by-step guide with examples.

How to Summon a Spider in Minecraft

Need a spider for your mob farm or just want to test something out? You can spawn spiders instantly using the /summon command. This guide covers all the versions from 1.8 up to the latest.

Do You Have Cheats Enabled?

First thing: you need to have cheats turned on in your world. When you create a world, there’s an option to “Allow Cheats” during setup. If you’re already in a world without cheats, you can enable them through world settings if you’re in Creative or with command blocks.

The Basic /summon Command

The command syntax depends on your Minecraft version. Here are the two main formats:

For Minecraft Java Edition 1.11+:

/summon spider [pos] [nbt]

For Minecraft Java Edition 1.8, 1.9, and 1.10:

/summon Spider [x] [y] [z] [dataTag]

Breaking Down the Syntax

  • pos or x y z: Optional. This is where you want the spider to spawn. Use coordinates like 100 50 200. If you skip this, it spawns right where you’re standing.
  • nbt or dataTag: Optional. This is for custom properties. You can make the spider named, make it not move, or add other tags. Example: {NoAI:1} stops it from moving around.
