Golden Axe Crafting Guide
A golden axe is a handy tool and weapon in Minecraft. It chops wood fast and deals 3 damage when you swing it. The downside? It breaks pretty quickly, so you’ll want to enchant it or just use it for early game.
What You Need
To craft a golden axe, grab these materials:
- 3 Gold Ingots
- 2 Sticks
How to Craft It
Open your crafting table and arrange the materials like this:
Row 1: Gold Ingot, Gold Ingot, empty
Row 2: Gold Ingot, Stick, empty
Row 3: empty, Stick, empty
The golden axe will appear in the result slot. Move it to your inventory and you’re done.
Creative Mode
If you’re in creative mode, you can find the golden axe directly in your inventory:
- Java 1.8 to 1.19: Tools tab
- Java 1.19.3 to 1.20: Tools & Utilities or Combat tab
Stats and Performance
Attack Damage and Durability
Golden axes are weak compared to other tools:
- Attack Damage: 3
- Durability: 32 uses
For reference, here’s how golden axes stack up:
| Tool | Attack Damage | Durability |
|---|---|---|
| Netherite Axe | 10 | 2031 |
| Diamond Axe | 6 | 1561 |
| Iron Axe | 5 | 250 |
| Stone Axe | 4 | 131 |
| Wooden Axe | 3 | 59 |
| Golden Axe | 3 | 32 |
Yeah, it’s pretty fragile. But gold is easy to find in the Nether, so you can make a new one quickly if needed.
Commands
Want to grab one with commands? Use these:
Java 1.13 and newer:
/give @p golden_axe 1
Java 1.8 to 1.12:
/give @p golden_axe 1 0
Enchantments
You can enchant a golden axe with most axe enchantments:
- Sharpness: More damage against mobs
- Smite: Extra damage to undead (zombies, skeletons, etc)
- Bane of Arthropods: More damage to spiders and bugs
- Efficiency: Chops wood and leaves faster
- Unbreaking: Lasts longer before breaking
- Mending: Fix it with experience instead of crafting a new one
- Silk Touch: Mines fragile blocks without breaking them
- Fortune: Get more drops from certain blocks
- Curse of Vanishing: Disappears when you die (not really useful)
If you want your golden axe to actually be useful for combat, throw Sharpness and Unbreaking on it.
What You Can Do With It
Golden axes are good for:
- Chopping wood quickly (second fastest after diamond)
- Early game combat when you don’t have better weapons yet
- Quick wood gathering if you’re in the Nether and need to get home fast
- Disenchanting to get books at the grindstone
That’s about it. Once you get iron or diamond, you’ll probably put the golden axe in a chest and forget about it.
