How to Enchant a Turtle Shell in Minecraft
Turtle shells are one of the few helmet pieces in Minecraft that can be enchanted to gain extra powers. You can add enchantments at an enchanting table, anvil, or with game commands. This guide covers using an enchanting table, which is the most common method.
Materials You Need
To enchant a turtle shell at an enchanting table, you’ll need:
- 1 Turtle Shell
- 3 Lapis Lazuli
In Creative mode, you don’t need the lapis lazuli. In Survival, each enchantment costs lapis from your inventory.
Enchantments for Turtle Shells
Turtle shells can receive these enchantments:

Steps to Enchant Your Turtle Shell
Step 1: Open the Enchanting Table
Right-click the enchanting table to open the enchant menu. You’ll see slots for an item and lapis lazuli, plus the enchantment options on the right.
Step 2: Place Your Turtle Shell
Put the turtle shell in the first slot. Then add 3 lapis lazuli to the second slot (skip this in Creative mode).
Step 3: Pick an Enchantment
Three random enchantment options will appear. Each shows a number on the right, which is the experience level cost to unlock it. You don’t need that many levels to use the enchantment, just to see what it is.
Higher level requirements usually mean better enchantments. Hover over an option to see the enchantment name and exact cost. Click the one you want.
Your lapis lazuli and experience levels will be spent, and the turtle shell will glow purple when enchanted.
Step 4: Grab Your Enchanted Shell
Take your enchanted turtle shell from the output slot. You might get 2-4 enchantments at once. This is normal and actually pretty common.
