DefaultSettings Mod Overview
DefaultSettings solves a frustrating problem: when you update a modpack, you lose all your custom settings, keybinds, and server list entries. This mod lets modpack creators bundle default settings that won’t overwrite your local customizations on every update.
If you’re playing a modpack and want your settings to stick around, or if you’re making a modpack and want to ship sensible defaults, DefaultSettings has you covered.
How It Works
For Players
Just install the mod and play normally. When a modpack includes DefaultSettings defaults, they’ll apply without wiping out your personal settings. Press F7 + G to open the settings GUI anytime to check what’s configured.
For Modpack Creators
DefaultSettings lets you package custom settings, keybinds, and server entries as part of your modpack. Here’s the basic process:
- Set up your Minecraft instance exactly how you want players to experience it
- Run the command
/defaultsettings saveor use the GUI to save your configuration - Copy the generated
defaultsettingsfolder from your config directory into your modpack’s config folder - Players who install your pack will get those settings as defaults without losing their own customizations
Accessing the GUI
Press F7 + G to open the DefaultSettings interface. You can do this from the mods list or while playing in a world. In Forge 1.7.10 and newer, you can also access it through Forge’s Mods list using DefaultSettings’ Config button.

Installation
DefaultSettings installs like any other mod:
Download the version that matches your Minecraft version and mod loader, then drop the jar file into your mods folder.
Version Compatibility
DefaultSettings is available for nearly every Minecraft version from 1.6.4 through 1.20.6 and beyond. Check the download section below to find your specific version and preferred mod loader (Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, or Quilt).
