Birch fences are a classic building material in Minecraft. You’ll craft them in sets of 3, making them great for quickly building enclosures, decorative barriers, or ranch-style fencing around your base.
Materials You Need
To craft a birch fence, grab these items:
- 4 Birch Planks
- 2 Sticks
Crafting Recipe

Creative Mode
If you’re in Creative mode, find birch fences in the Decoration Blocks tab (Java 1.8-1.19) or Building Blocks tab (Java 1.19.3+).
Command for Admins
To give yourself a birch fence using commands:
/give @p birch_fence 1
For older versions (1.8-1.12), use:
/give @p birch_fence 1 0
Block Properties
Birch fences connect to other blocks and can be waterlogged. They extend in four directions: north, south, east, and west. This makes them useful for building detailed structures and handling water features.
Using Birch Fences
Birch fences work great for:
- Creating animal enclosures
- Building ranches and farms
- Decorative railings and borders
- Mixing with other wood types for variety
Other Fence Types
Minecraft has many fence options. You can craft fences from oak, spruce, jungle, dark oak, acacia, nether brick, crimson, warped, mangrove, and bamboo wood. Each has its own look and crafting recipe.
Fence Gates
Pair your birch fences with a birch fence gate for access points. Gates work the same way as fences but can be opened and closed.
