Better Fishing Mod 1.12.2
Better Fishing Mod 1.12.2 overhauls the vanilla fishing system with a new reeling mechanic that actually makes fishing engaging. Instead of sitting around waiting for a bite, you’re actively managing tension on the line. Catch different fish based on water type, time of day, weather, and more. Each fish has unique weight and personality. Turn your catch into fish slices at a crafting table based on weight.
How the Reeling System Works
When you cast your line, a HUD appears showing balance. Fish will tug the line, and you need to counteract that using two new keys: Reel In and Reel Out. Tighten the line too much and it snaps. Loosen it too much and the fish escapes. The blue line in the HUD indicates the sweet spot. When you have the balance right, right-click again to catch the fish.
You can hear the audio pitch change as you adjust the reel. This helps you find the right tension by ear. Watch for bubbles on the surface too – more bubbles mean the fish is fast, intelligent, and harder to manage.
Fish Types and Characteristics
Each fish has its own stats: intelligence, speed, size, weight, and habitat preferences. Some fish only appear during rain or at specific times. Tuna are fast and intelligent found only in saltwater. Catfish are huge and rare in freshwater. Mackerel are tiny and common in saltwater. Every fish of the same type has slight variations in weight and speed, so two tuna catches won’t be identical.
Five base fish types ship with the mod:
- Tuna: Intelligent, fast, and agile in saltwater. Appears any time of day. Moderately rare.
- Catfish: Slow and huge in freshwater. Only shows during rain and daytime. Very rare.
- Salmon: Balanced stats in saltwater. Normal intelligence, normal speed. Common.
- Carp: Smaller and slower in freshwater. Very common. Dumber fish.
- Mackerel: Tiny and fast in saltwater. Extremely common. Easiest to catch.
Environmental Conditions
Fish don’t appear everywhere. Saltwater fish only spawn in ocean biomes. Freshwater fish only spawn in rivers and lakes. Time of day matters too. Some fish are day hunters, others are night hunters. Rain triggers certain species to feed. This means your fishing success depends on location, time, and weather.
Crafting and Harvesting
After catching a fish, put it in the crafting grid to get slices of raw fish. The bigger the fish, the more slices you get. A 50-pound tuna gives way more food than a 5-pound tuna. This makes fish weight meaningful for survival.
Customization
Everything is configurable. Adjust fishing difficulty, HUD settings, fish characteristics, and more through config files. Fine-tune how intelligent each species is, how rare they spawn, their weight ranges, movement speed, and environmental preferences.
