Wooden Tools Are Dumb Mod

Wooden Tools Are Dumb Mod (1.21.1, 1.20.1) replaces wooden pickaxe and axe with more realistic tools and optionally offers a little more. You heard this before. There are small mods that add flint tools and maybe grass fiber. There are large mods like MITE that completely change the game.

How to use:

Introduction:

You cringe at wooden pickaxe. Even if you understand the need for early game to be simple and easy to understand, it’s not for you. Not anymore.

  • You want immersion: to do something that makes sense.
  • You want challenge: to feel the first phase. To feel accomplishment when you advance from one tool tier to the next. That’s the main thing this mod’s author tries to deliver – feeling that you obtained a small victory when you craft your first stone pickaxe. There’s none in original game.

We Need Wood:

  • Punching wood won’t work, you assumed as much. Get flint, get sticks, make a flint hatchet.
  • The first steps aren’t too hard. You may want to make a crafting table and chest before continuing.

We Need Cobblestone:

This mod has three paths in regards to getting cobblestone:

  • Simple mode: craft a flint pickaxe, break stone blocks until the picks breaks and you’re done with this mod. Yes – this path offers no challenge, but at least it’s more realistic than wooden pickaxe, so, yay? Anyway, hard mode is enabled by default, not this.
  • Nothing mode: if some other mod offers a way for you to obtain cobblestone (for example flint tools or rocks on the ground), and you prefer that other system (what’s wrong with you?), this path simply makes the mod back off after the flint hatchet. Other stuff isn’t craftable. You’re on your own.
  • Hard mode: this is where it’s at – this is how the author wanted the early game to be played.
So… how do you break this stone that is on the cliff right next to you? Maybe you’d enjoy the game more if you figure it out by yourself? If not, details are in the spoiler block but it’s really not recommended.
