Wet Sponge Wiki Guide

This Minecraft tutorial explains how to craft a wet sponge with screenshots and step-by-step instructions.

In Minecraft, a wet sponge is an item that you can not make with a crafting table or furnace. Instead, you need to find and gather this item in the game.

Let’s explore how to add a wet sponge to your inventory.

Where to find a Wet Sponge in Creative Mode

Minecraft Java Edition (PC/Mac)

Here is where you can find a wet sponge in the Creative Inventory menu:

Platform Version(s) Creative Menu Location
Java Edition (PC/Mac) 1.8 – 1.19
Java Edition (PC/Mac) 1.19.3
  • Platform is the platform that applies.
  • Version(s) is the Minecraft version numbers where the item can be found in the menu location listed (we have tested and confirmed this version number).
  • Creative Menu Location is the location of the item in the Creative Inventory menu.

How to get a Wet Sponge in Survival Mode

There are 2 ways to get a wet sponge in Survival mode.

1. Find Wet Sponges Growing in the Ocean Monument

You can add a wet sponge to your inventory in Survival mode by gathering wet sponges that grow naturally in the Ocean Monument (also called Guardian Temple). So, let’s get started!

The Ocean monument is found in the Deep Ocean, Deep Lukewarm Ocean and Deep Cold Ocean biomes.

Once you’ve found the Ocean Monument, look for a group of sponges growing in the temple. In this example, we’ve found a group of sponges growing on the ceiling in one of the rooms in the temple. You will need to dig up one of these wet sponges.

The game control to dig up the wet sponge depends on the version of Minecraft:

  • For Java Edition (PC/Mac), left click and hold on the wet sponge.
  • For Pocket Edition (PE), you tap and hold on the wet sponge.
  • For Xbox 360 and Xbox One, press and hold the RT button on the Xbox controller.
  • For PS3 and PS4, press and hold the R2 button on the PS controller.
  • For Wii U, press and hold the ZR button on the gamepad.
  • For Nintendo Switch, press and hold the ZR button on the controller.
  • For Windows 10 Edition, left click and hold on the wet sponge.
  • For Education Edition, left click and hold on the wet sponge.

The wet sponge will break and a smaller sponge will float on the ground. Make sure you pick up the wet sponge before it disappears.

2. Find and Kill an Elder Guardian

You can add a wet sponge to your inventory in Survival mode by killing an elder guardian.

In Minecraft, you can find guardians inside the Ocean Monument (also called the Guardian Temple). These Ocean Monuments are found in the Deep Ocean and Deep Lukewarm Ocean biomes.

Once you find an elder guardian, you need to attack it. When you attack the elder guardian, it will turn pink as it takes damage.

Continue to chase and attack the elder guardian. Once you have killed the elder guardian, it may drop one or more of the following: a wet sponge, prismarine crystals, or prismarine shards.

Make sure you pick up the wet sponge and any other items before they disappear.

These are useful items and should be kept in your inventory to be used later.

Minecraft Java Edition (PC/Mac)

In Minecraft, a wet sponge has the following Name, ID and DataValue:

  • Minecraft ID is the Internal number for the item.
  • Data Value (or damage value) identifies the variation of the block if more than one type exists for the Minecraft ID.
