String Wiki Guide

This Minecraft tutorial explains how to craft string with screenshots and step-by-step instructions.

In Minecraft, string is an item that you can not make with a crafting table or furnace. Instead, you need to find and gather this item in the game.

String - Wiki Guide 1

Let’s explore how to add string to your inventory.

Where to find String in Creative Mode

Minecraft Java Edition (PC/Mac)

Here is where you can find string in the Creative Inventory menu:

Platform Version(s) Creative Menu Location
Java Edition (PC/Mac) 1.8 – 1.11
Java Edition (PC/Mac) 1.12 – 1.19
Java Edition (PC/Mac) 1.19.3
Java Edition (PC/Mac) 1.19.3
  • Platform is the platform that applies.
  • Version(s) is the Minecraft version numbers where the item can be found in the menu location listed (we have tested and confirmed this version number).
  • Creative Menu Location is the location of the item in the Creative Inventory menu.

Required Materials to make String in Bedrock Edition and Education Edition

In Minecraft Bedrock Edition and Education Edition, these are the materials you can use to craft string:

How to craft String in Survival Mode using a Crafting Table

Bedrock Edition and Education Edition ONLY

You can use cobweb in Bedrock Edition and Education Edition to craft string using a crafting table (this will not work in Java Edition). Here is the crafting recipe:

String - Wiki Guide 11

TIP: This crafting recipe will NOT work in Java Edition (as there is currently no crafting recipe for string in Java Edition).

How to gather String in Survival Mode

You can add string to your inventory in Survival mode by killing a spider. So let’s get started!

1. Find a Spider

You first need to find a spider. You can find spiders in most Overworld biomes in light levels of 7 or less. Spiders will spawn in the dark, usually at night.

String - Wiki Guide 12

2. Attack and Kill a Spider

Once you find a spider, you need to attack it. When you attack the spider, it will turn pink as it takes damage.

String - Wiki Guide 13

Continue to chase and attack the spider. The spider will disappear when it is killed.

String - Wiki Guide 14

When the spider is killed, it will drop one of the following items: string or spider eye. There isn’t a 100% chance that the spider will drop string when it dies. If it doesn’t drop one, find another spider and try again.

3. Pick up the String

Make sure you pick up the dropped items before they disappear.

These are useful items and should be kept in your inventory to be used later.

Item ID and Name

Minecraft Java Edition (PC/Mac)

In Minecraft, string has the following Name, ID and DataValue:

Description
(Minecraft ID Name)
ID Data Value Stack Size Version
String
(minecraft:string)
287 0 64 1.8 – 1.12
String
(minecraft:string)
287 64 1.13 – 1.19.3
  • Description is what the item is called and (Minecraft ID Name) is the string value that is used in game commands.
  • Minecraft ID is the Internal number for the item.
  • Data Value (or damage value) identifies the variation of the block if more than one type exists for the Minecraft ID.
  • Stack Size is the maximum stack size for this item. While some items in Minecraft are stackable up to 64, other items can only be stacked up to 16 or 1. (NOTE: These stack sizes are for vanilla Minecraft only. If you are running a mod, some mods may change the stack size for an item.)
  • Platform is the platform that applies.
  • Version(s) is the Minecraft version numbers that the Minecraft ID and Name are valid for.
