Smithing Template Wiki Guide
This Minecraft tutorial explains how to craft a Smithing Template with screenshots and step-by-step instructions.
In Minecraft, the Smithing Template is a new item that was introduced in Minecraft 1.20. A Smithing Template is used to upgrade your diamond gear (armor, tools, and weapons) into netherite gear.
Let’s explore how to add a Smithing Template to your inventory.
Where to find a Smithing Template in Creative Mode
Minecraft Java Edition (PC/Mac)
Here is where you can find a Smithing Template in the Creative Inventory menu:
Platform | Version(s) | Creative Menu Location |
---|---|---|
 Java Edition (PC/Mac) | 1.20 | Ingredients |
- Platform is the platform that applies.
- Version(s)Â is the Minecraft version numbers where the item can be found in the menu location listed (we have tested and confirmed this version number).
- Creative Menu Location is the location of the item in the Creative Inventory menu.
How to get a Smithing Template in Survival Mode
You can add a Smithing Template to your inventory in Survival mode from a Bastion Remnant. So, let’s get started!
1. Find a Bastion Remnant
First, you need to find a Bastion Remnant in Minecraft. It looks like a large dark tower made out of blackstone (and blackstone variations). It can be found in the Nether dimension in the Nether Wastes, Soul Sand Valley, Warped Forest and Crimson Forest biomes.

TIP: Try using the /locate command to quickly find a Bastion Remnant!
2. Look for a Chest
Next, the inside of the Bastion Remnant is made up of randomly generated corriders, rooms, bridges, and treasure rooms. Look around the Bastion Remnant until you find a chest.
3. Open the Chest
Open the chest and look for a Smithing Template. There is a good chance that you will find at least one. You can use a Smithing Template to upgrade your diamond gear (armor, tools, and weapons) to netherite gear.
If you don’t find a Smithing Template in the chest, look for another chest in the Bastion Remnant and try again.
Congratulations, you’ve now learned how to add a Smithing Template to your inventory.
