The Smite enchantment is one of the most useful tools in Minecraft for taking down undead mobs fast. If you’re tired of slow combat, this guide covers everything you need to know about adding Smite to your weapons and making the most of it.
What Does Smite Do?
Smite increases your attack damage against undead mobs. That means skeletons, wither skeletons, zombies, zombified piglins, drowneds, and wither bosses all take extra damage when you hit them with a Smite weapon. The more levels you have, the harder you hit.
How to Get Smite
You can add Smite to any sword or axe using three different methods:
- Enchanting Table
- Anvil
- /enchant command
Using an Enchanting Table
Open an enchanting table and place your sword or axe in the slot. You’ll see random enchantments available. Keep opening and closing the enchanting interface until Smite shows up, then grab it. You’ll need enough experience levels for the enchantment you want.
Using an Anvil
If you have an enchanted book with Smite, use an anvil to combine it with your weapon. This costs experience but gives you exactly the enchantment you want without randomness.
Using Commands
If you prefer commands, use /enchant @s smite [level] where [level] is 1 through 5. For example:
/enchant @s smite 5
Smite Levels
Smite goes up to level 5. Each level deals more damage to undead mobs than the last.
| Enchantment Name | Smite |
|---|---|
| Min Level | Level 1 (Smite I) |
| Max Level | Level 5 (Smite V) |
| Description | Increases attack damage against undead mobs |
| Works On | Swords and Axes |
| How to Add | Enchanting Table, Anvil, or /enchant command |
What Can You Enchant with Smite?
Smite only works on two weapon types: swords and axes. You can add it to wooden, stone, iron, golden, diamond, and netherite versions of these tools. You can also put Smite on enchanted books to save it for later use on an anvil.
Incompatible Enchantments
You can’t combine Smite with these enchantments:
- Sharpness
- Bane of Arthropods
These three enchantments all do the same basic job, so Minecraft won’t let you stack them on one weapon.
Using Your Smite Weapon
Once you have a sword or axe with Smite, just hold it and attack undead mobs. You need to have it in your hand for the enchantment to work. The higher the level, the faster you’ll kill zombies, skeletons, and other undead enemies.
