Seagrass Wiki Guide

This Minecraft tutorial explains how to craft seagrass (formerly called sea grass) with screenshots and step-by-step instructions.

In Minecraft, seagrass is an item that you can not make with a crafting table or furnace. Instead, you need to find and gather this item in the game.

How to get Seagrass in Survival Mode

You can add seagrass to your inventory in Survival mode by trimming the seagrass (found underwater) with a pair of shears. So, let’s get started!

1. Find a Seagrass

First, you need to find seagrass growing on blocks of sand that are underwater in the Ocean biome. So, look for a large water source with kelp and seagrass growing.

2. Hold your Shears

Next, place the shears in your hand by selecting them in the hotbar.

Position your pointer (the plus sign) on the seagrass. You should see the block of seagrass become highlighted in your game window.

3. Use the Shears

Next, use the shears on the seagrass to cut them from the block of sand. The game control to use the shears on the seagrass depends on the version of Minecraft:

  • For Java Edition (PC/Mac), left click and hold on the seagrass.
  • For Pocket Edition (PE), you tap and hold on the seagrass.
  • For Xbox 360 and Xbox One, press and hold the RT button on the Xbox controller.
  • For PS3 and PS4, press and hold the R2 button on the PS controller.
  • For Wii U, press and hold the ZR button on the gamepad.
  • For Nintendo Switch, press and hold the ZR button on the controller.
  • For Windows 10 Edition, left click and hold on the seagrass.
  • For Education Edition, left click and hold on the seagrass.

Clip with the shears until the smaller seagrass appears. Because you are in the water, the seagrass might float right up to you.

4. Pick up the Seagrass

Make sure you pick up the seagrass before it disappears.

Seagrass is a useful item and should be kept in your inventory to be used later.
