Raw Iron Wiki Guide

This Minecraft tutorial explains how to craft raw iron with screenshots and step-by-step instructions.

In Minecraft, raw iron is a new item that was introduced in the Caves & Cliffs Update: Part I. Raw iron is an item that you can not make with a crafting table or furnace. Instead, you need to find and gather this item in the game.

How to get Raw Iron in Survival Mode

You can add raw iron to your inventory in Survival mode by mining either iron ore or deepslate iron ore. So, let’s get started!

1. Find Iron Ore or Deepslate Iron Ore

First, let’s explore where to find iron ore and deepslate iron ore. Both are found underground in the Overworld.

Iron Ore

This is what iron ore looks like:

Iron ore is medium gray with iron specks, and can be usually be found at a y-coordinate between 1 and 63.

Deepslate Iron Ore

This is what deepslate iron ore looks like:

Raw Iron - Wiki Guide 7

Deepslate iron ore is darker gray with iron specks, and is usually found below a y-coordinate of 0.

2. Hold a Stone, Diamond, Iron, or Netherite Pickaxe

To mine these ores, you need to dig up the block with a diamond pickaxe, iron pickaxe, stone pickaxe, or netherite pickaxe.

Other tools will not dig up the block and let you add the raw iron to your inventory.

In this example, we are going to use a stone pickaxe to dig up the block.

3. Mine the Block

The game control to mine the block depends on the version of Minecraft:

  • For Java Edition (PC/Mac), left click and hold on the block.
  • For Pocket Edition (PE), you tap and hold on the block.
  • For Xbox One, press and hold the RT button on the Xbox controller.
  • For PS4, press and hold the R2 button on the PS controller.
  • For Nintendo Switch, press and hold the ZR button on the controller.
  • For Windows 10 Edition, left click and hold on the block.
  • For Education Edition, left click and hold on the block.

You will need to continue to dig until the block breaks and a small raw iron finally appears. The raw iron will float on the ground.

4. Pick up the Raw Iron

Make sure you pick up the raw iron before it disappears.
