How to Install Texture Packs on Minecraft PE (Bedrock)

Step-by-step guide to importing .mcpack resource packs on Minecraft Pocket Edition and Bedrock for Android, iOS, and Windows 10/11.

The .mcpack format is Minecraft Bedrock’s built-in way to package resource packs. When you open one, Minecraft does most of the work for you, but there are a couple of steps to actually get the pack active in-game that trip people up.

What You Need Before You Start

  • Minecraft Bedrock Edition installed on your device (Pocket Edition on Android or iOS, or the Microsoft Store version on Windows 10/11)
  • A .mcpack file downloaded to your device
  • Enough free storage, especially for high-resolution packs

This guide does not apply to Minecraft Java Edition. Java uses .zip resource packs placed in a folder, not the .mcpack format. If you are on Java, check out OptiFine for texture and shader support, or see the guides for Fabric and Forge if you want to run mods.

How to Install a .mcpack File

Android

  1. Download the .mcpack file to your device. Most browsers save it to your Downloads folder.
  2. Open your file manager app (Files, My Files, or whatever your phone uses) and navigate to Downloads.
  3. Tap the .mcpack file. Your phone will ask what app to open it with. Choose Minecraft.
  4. Minecraft launches and shows an “Import started” message. Wait for it to finish. Do not close the app.
  5. Once done, go to Settings > Global Resources. You’ll see the pack listed under “My Packs.”
  6. Tap the pack, then tap the + button to move it to the Active side. Tap Apply.

iOS (iPhone and iPad)

  1. Download the .mcpack file. In Safari it usually downloads to iCloud Drive > Downloads. In Chrome or other browsers, check the Files app.
  2. Tap the file. If Minecraft does not open automatically, tap the Share icon and choose Copy to Minecraft.
  3. Minecraft opens and imports the pack. You’ll get a confirmation screen when it is done.
  4. Go to Settings > Global Resources, find the pack under “My Packs,” tap it, and press + to activate it.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 (Microsoft Store / Bedrock)

  1. Download the .mcpack file to your PC.
  2. Double-click the file. Windows will open Minecraft Bedrock and import the pack automatically.
  3. Once imported, go to Settings > Global Resources and activate the pack, or add it to a specific world through that world’s Resource Packs settings.

Applying to a Single World (All Platforms)

Instead of activating a pack globally, you can apply it to just one world. On the world selection screen, tap the edit (pencil) icon on your world, then go to Resource Packs and move the pack to the Active column. This keeps your other worlds unaffected.

Common Mistakes and Troubleshooting

Tapping the file does nothing on Android

Your phone may not have Minecraft set as the default handler for .mcpack files. Long-press the file, choose Open With, and manually select Minecraft from the list.

Can’t find the file on iOS

If you downloaded using Chrome or Firefox on iPhone, the file goes to the app’s internal storage, not the Files app. Try downloading with Safari instead, or look inside the browser’s own download folder. Safari saves to iCloud Drive > Downloads by default.

The pack imported but looks broken or wrong in-game

The pack was likely made for a different version of Bedrock. Check the pack’s page or readme for the supported version range. Packs made for older versions sometimes work fine on newer ones, but packs targeting newer features will not render correctly on older builds.

I only have a .zip file, not a .mcpack

Some sites package resource packs as .zip files. On Android you can often just rename the file extension from .zip to .mcpack and import it as normal. On iOS this is trickier. Try downloading a different version of the pack from the original source that is already in .mcpack format.

The pack doesn’t appear in My Packs after importing

Close Minecraft fully and reopen it. If it still does not show up, go to Settings > Storage on some older Bedrock versions, where packs are listed separately. Also confirm the import screen actually showed a success message rather than an error.

Which Editions and Versions This Applies To

The .mcpack import process works on all Bedrock platforms: Pocket Edition (Android and iOS), Minecraft for Windows 10/11 via the Microsoft Store, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Nintendo Switch. The steps for the file manager differ by device, but the in-game steps once Minecraft opens are the same across all of them.

This does not apply to Minecraft Java Edition under any circumstances. Java and Bedrock use completely separate resource pack systems.
