How to Install Maps on Minecraft PE (Bedrock Edition)

Step-by-step guide to importing .mcworld map files on Minecraft Bedrock and Pocket Edition for Android, iOS, and Windows 10/11.

If you downloaded a .mcworld map file and are not sure what to do with it, you are in the right place. Importing maps on Minecraft Bedrock and Pocket Edition is fast once you know the steps, and the process is a bit different depending on whether you are on Android, iPhone, or Windows.

What You Need Before Starting

  • A downloaded .mcworld file (maps for Bedrock use this format, not a zip or folder)
  • Minecraft Bedrock Edition installed and working on your device
  • On Android: a file manager app (your default Files app works fine)
  • On iOS/iPadOS: the Files app (built into iOS)
  • On Windows: Minecraft from the Microsoft Store (the Bedrock version)

Do not unzip or extract the .mcworld file. It is not a zip archive that needs unpacking. Minecraft reads it directly.

How to Install a .mcworld Map

Android

  1. Download the .mcworld file. It usually lands in your Downloads folder.
  2. Open your Files or file manager app and navigate to Downloads.
  3. Tap the .mcworld file once.
  4. If your device asks which app to open it with, choose Minecraft.
  5. Minecraft will launch automatically and show an “Importing…” screen. Wait for it to finish.
  6. The map now appears in your worlds list under Play > Worlds.

iPhone and iPad (iOS / iPadOS)

  1. Download the .mcworld file. Safari usually saves it to the Files app under Downloads.
  2. Open the Files app and find the file.
  3. Long-press the file and tap Share.
  4. Scroll through the share sheet and tap Copy to Minecraft (or “Open in Minecraft” depending on iOS version).
  5. Minecraft opens and imports the map. Once it says “Importing complete,” check your worlds list.

If you do not see Minecraft in the share sheet, make sure the app is installed and has been opened at least once. Sometimes you need to tap More at the bottom of the share sheet to find it.

Windows 10 / Windows 11

  1. Download the .mcworld file to anywhere on your PC, such as the Downloads folder.
  2. Double-click the file.
  3. Windows automatically opens it with Minecraft and begins importing. You will see Minecraft launch if it was closed.
  4. Once imported, find the map in your worlds list inside the game.

If double-clicking does nothing, right-click the file, choose Open with, and select Minecraft. You may need to click “More apps” to find it.

Common Mistakes and Troubleshooting

The map is not showing up in my worlds list

Restart Minecraft. Sometimes the worlds list does not refresh automatically after an import. Close the game fully and reopen it.

Minecraft is not appearing as an option when I tap the file

This usually means Minecraft has not been fully set up. Open Minecraft, get to the main menu, then close it and try opening the file again. The game needs to register with the OS first.

The file says it is corrupted or will not import

Re-download the map. Partial downloads are a common cause. Also confirm the file ends in .mcworld and not .zip, .rar, or .mcpack. Those are different file types that need different steps.

I accidentally put the file in the Minecraft folder manually

Do not drag .mcworld files into the Minecraft folder by hand. The game will not recognize them that way. Always use the tap-to-open method so Minecraft handles the import itself.

The map imported but it is empty or broken

This usually means the map was made for a newer version of Minecraft than you have installed. Update the game and try again. Some maps also require specific settings like Experimental Features to be turned on, which the map description should mention.

Which Versions and Editions This Applies To

This guide covers Minecraft Bedrock Edition on all platforms: Android (Pocket Edition), iOS/iPadOS (Pocket Edition), Windows 10, Windows 11, Xbox, and PlayStation. The .mcworld format is used across all of these. Chromebook users running Minecraft through the Android app follow the Android steps above.

This does not apply to Minecraft Java Edition on PC. Java uses a different folder-based method for map installation, and .mcworld files will not work there.

Console editions on Xbox and PlayStation can import .mcworld files shared through Realms, but direct file import from a USB drive or download is not supported on those platforms.
