Fire Protection is one of the most useful armor enchantments in Minecraft. It reduces damage you take from fire, lava, and magma blocks, making it essential for exploration in the Nether or around lava lakes.
What Does Fire Protection Do?
Fire Protection reduces the damage you take from fire-based sources. This includes damage from burning blocks, lava, magma blocks, and direct fire damage. The higher the level, the more protection you get.
You can apply Fire Protection to any piece of armor: helmets, chestplates, leggings, and boots. The more armor pieces you enchant with it, the better your overall protection.
Fire Protection Levels
Fire Protection goes up to level 4. Each level provides more damage reduction:
| Level | Damage Reduction |
|---|---|
| Level 1 | 8% fire damage reduction |
| Level 2 | 16% fire damage reduction |
| Level 3 | 24% fire damage reduction |
| Level 4 | 32% fire damage reduction |
How to Add Fire Protection to Armor
You have three ways to add Fire Protection to your armor:
1. Enchanting Table
Place any armor piece in an enchanting table along with lapis lazuli. Fire Protection might show up as an option to enchant.
2. Anvil
Combine your armor with an enchanted book that has Fire Protection. Place the armor and book on the anvil, and you’re done.
3. Command
Use the /enchant command to instantly add Fire Protection to armor in your hand. This is the fastest way if you have cheats enabled.
Armor Types That Can Have Fire Protection
Fire Protection works on any armor material:
- Diamond armor
- Netherite armor
- Iron armor
- Golden armor
- Leather armor
- Chainmail armor
- Turtle shell
- Enchanted books
Incompatible Enchantments
Fire Protection cannot be combined with these other protection enchantments:

You can only pick one of these protection enchantments per piece of armor. Choose whichever one you need most for where you’re going.

Tips for Using Fire Protection
Fire Protection is great for Nether exploration. If you spend a lot of time in the Nether hunting for ancient debris or exploring bastions, enchant your whole armor set with it.
You can also combine Fire Protection with other useful enchantments like Unbreaking and Mending to make your armor last longer.
If you’re building near lava or planning a Nether base, Fire Protection on your boots can save your life from accidental lava contact.
