The Crimson Forest is a distinctive biome found deep in the Nether dimension. Added in the Nether Update (1.16), it’s known for its deep red landscape, crimson trees, and unique mobs. This is the only place in vanilla Minecraft where you’ll find piglins and hoglins.
What is the Crimson Forest Biome?
The Crimson Forest is one of two new Nether biomes introduced in Minecraft 1.16. It has a red and crimson color scheme throughout, with tall tree-like structures made of crimson wood. The sky is a permanent red, and there’s no weather to worry about since you’re underground in the Nether dimension.
Crimson Trees
The tree-like structures in the Crimson Forest are made from crimson stems (the wood) with nether wart blocks forming the canopy. Shroomlights can spawn within the leaves, giving the trees a glowing appearance. What makes crimson wood special is that items crafted from it are fireproof. Unlike overworld logs, crimson stems won’t burn in lava or fire.
Plants and Vegetation
The Crimson Forest is filled with unique plants you won’t find anywhere else:
- Crimson Fungus – A plant you can break by hand or with tools
- Warped Fungus – Similar to crimson fungus but with a blue tint
- Crimson Roots – Decorative roots that hang from the ground
- Weeping Vines – Vines that hang downward from above
Blocks You’ll Find
Several block types are exclusive to or common in the Crimson Forest:
- Crimson Nylium – The main ground block with a red, fungal appearance
- Crimson Stem – The wood from crimson trees
- Stripped Crimson Stem – Crimson stem with bark removed
- Nether Wart Block – Forms the leaves of crimson trees
- Shroomlight – Light-emitting blocks found in tree canopies
- Netherrack – The base stone of the Nether
Mobs and Creatures
The Crimson Forest is the only biome where piglins and hoglins naturally spawn. Both are hostile mobs that will attack on sight. You’ll also encounter the typical Nether mobs:
- Piglins – Humanoid creatures that attack you but won’t attack hoglins
- Hoglins – Boar-like creatures that attack and can knock you back
- Ghasts – Floating jellyfish-like mobs that shoot fireballs
- Zombified Piglins – Neutral unless you hit them first
