Chest Wiki Guide

This Minecraft tutorial explains how to craft a chest with screenshots and step-by-step instructions.

In Minecraft, the chest is another important item in your inventory. As you play the game, you will begin to fill your inventory with items that you’ve gathered. A chest can be used to store valuable items or items that you don’t currently need.

Each item stored in a chest is removed from your inventory. When you want to use that item, you will need to take it out of the chest and place it back into your inventory.

Let’s explore how to make a chest.

Here is where you can find a chest in the Creative Inventory menu:

  • Creative Menu Location is the location of the item in the Creative Inventory menu.

Chest - Wiki Guide 14 8 Mangrove Planks
Chest - Wiki Guide 15 8 Bamboo Planks
Chest - Wiki Guide 16 8 Crimson Planks
Chest - Wiki Guide 17 8 Warped Planks

TIP: You can use any type of wood planks! You don’t have to gather them all.

How to craft a Chest in Survival Mode

1. Open the Crafting Menu

First, open your crafting table so that you have the 3×3 crafting grid that looks like this:

Chest - Wiki Guide 18

2. Add Items to make a Chest

In the crafting menu, you should see a crafting area that is made up of a 3×3 crafting grid. To make a chest, place 8 wood planks in the 3×3 crafting grid.

When crafting with wood planks, you can use any kind of wood planks, such as oak, spruce, birch, jungle, acacia, dark oak, mangrove, bamboo, crimson, or warped planks. In our example, we are using oak planks.

When making a chest, it is important that the wood planks are placed in the exact pattern as the image below. There should be 3 wood planks in the first row, 2 wood planks in the second row (with the center box empty), and 3 wood planks in the third row. This is the Minecraft crafting recipe for a chest.

Chest - Wiki Guide 19

Now that you have filled the crafting area with the correct pattern, the chest will appear in the box to the right.

3. Move the Chest to Inventory

Once you have crafted a chest, you need to move the new item to your inventory.

Congratulations, you have made a chest in Minecraft!

Item ID and Name

Minecraft Java Edition (PC/Mac)

In Minecraft, a chest has the following Name, ID and DataValue:

Description
(Minecraft ID Name)
Data Value Stack Size Version
Chest

Chest
(minecraft:chest)
64 1.13 – 1.19.4
  • Description is what the item is called and (Minecraft ID Name) is the string value that is used in game commands.
  • Data Value (or damage value) identifies the variation of the block if more than one type exists for the Minecraft ID.
  • Stack Size is the maximum stack size for this item. While some items in Minecraft are stackable up to 64, other items can only be stacked up to 16 or 1. (NOTE: These stack sizes are for vanilla Minecraft only. If you are running a mod, some mods may change the stack size for an item.)
