Oak saplings are one of the easiest items to find in Minecraft if you know where to look. Unlike most items, you can’t craft them, but you can collect them from oak trees by breaking leaves with an axe.
Where to Find Oak Saplings
Creative Mode
In Creative mode, oak saplings appear in your inventory tabs depending on your Minecraft version:
| Minecraft Java Version | Creative Tab Location |
|---|---|
| 1.8 to 1.19 | Decoration Blocks |
| 1.19.3 to 1.19.4 | Natural Blocks |
Survival Mode
In survival, oak saplings drop when you chop down the leaves of an oak tree. The drop rate is around 5%, so you’ll need to break a lot of leaves to get several saplings.
How to Get Oak Saplings in Survival
Step 1: Find an Oak Tree
Oak trees grow in several biomes. Check forests, windswept hills, swamps, and mesa plateaus. Forests are your best bet if you want to find trees fast.
Step 2: Get an Axe (Optional but Faster)
You can break oak leaves with your bare hand, but an axe speeds things up. Any axe works: wooden, stone, iron, diamond, golden, or netherite.
Step 3: Break the Leaves
Attack the oak leaves until they break. Keep breaking leaves and wait for a sapling to drop. The controls vary by platform:
- Java Edition (PC/Mac): Left click and hold
- Pocket Edition: Tap and hold
- Xbox: Press and hold RT
- PlayStation: Press and hold R2
- Nintendo Switch: Press and hold ZR
- Wii U: Press and hold ZR
Pro tip: Break the leaves, not the wood. Breaking tree trunks gives you oak wood or logs, not saplings.
Step 4: Collect Your Sapling
Pick up the sapling before it disappears (it despawns after 5 minutes). The sapling goes into your inventory or hotbar right away.
