How to Craft a Book and Quill in Minecraft
A Book and Quill is a handy item for writing and storing text in Minecraft. Once you craft one, you can write notes, stories, or instructions that other players can read. Here’s how to make one.
What You Need
To craft a Book and Quill, gather these materials:
- 1 Book
- 1 Feather
- 1 Ink Sac
Books drop from bookshelves when broken. Feathers come from chickens. Ink Sacs are from squids or axolotls.
Crafting Recipe
Place your items in the crafting table like this:

The items go in the top row. The Book goes first, then the Ink Sac, then the Feather. Grab your Book and Quill from the result slot.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Open Your Crafting Table
Right-click a crafting table to open the 3×3 grid. If you don’t have one, craft it from 4 wood planks.
2. Arrange Your Materials
Place the Book in slot 1 (top left), Ink Sac in slot 2 (top middle), and Feather in slot 3 (top right). Leave the rest empty. Don’t put items in other slots or the recipe won’t work.
3. Grab Your Book and Quill
Once the recipe is correct, the Book and Quill appears in the result slot on the right. Click it to pick it up and add it to your inventory.
Creative Mode
If you’re in Creative Mode, you can find the Book and Quill directly in the inventory menu. It’s under Miscellaneous (versions 1.8-1.19) or Tools & Utilities (1.19.3+).

Use @s instead of @p if you want it in your own inventory, or replace @p with a player name for someone else.
Item Details
Minecraft ID
In commands, the Book and Quill is called writable_book. It has a stack size of 1, so you can only hold one at a time.
Version Support
The Book and Quill exists in all modern Minecraft versions from 1.8 onwards. The crafting recipe is the same across Java Edition for all supported versions.
What You Can Do With It
Once you craft a Book and Quill, open it and start writing. You can write up to 50 pages. Close the book and it becomes a Written Book that other players can read. Written Books are useful for sharing stories, instructions, or lore in multiplayer worlds.
