Basalt Block Guide – Find & Mine in Minecraft

Find basalt in the Nether's Basalt Deltas. Learn how to mine it with a pickaxe, what to craft, and get all the details for Minecraft 1.16+.

Basalt is a dark volcanic block you’ll find in the Nether. It appears naturally in the Basalt Deltas biome as tall columns and formations. You can’t craft it, but you can mine it and use it for building. Basalt was added in Minecraft 1.16 and shows up in Java Edition, Bedrock, and all other versions from that point forward.

Where to Find Basalt

Basalt only spawns in the Basalt Deltas biome, which is exclusively in the Nether. The blocks form tall, thick pillars and columns throughout the biome. You’ll also see magma blocks and lava lakes mixed in, so bring some fire resistance or water.

To get there, build a Nether portal and head into the Nether. Then search around until you find the Basalt Deltas. You’ll recognize it instantly by the dark pillar formations. If navigation is tough, drink a Potion of Night Vision to see better in the dark.

How to Mine Basalt

Get the Right Pickaxe

You need a stone pickaxe or better. Here’s what works:

  • Stone pickaxe
  • Iron pickaxe
  • Diamond pickaxe
  • Netherite pickaxe

Don’t bother with a wooden pickaxe or your bare hand. The basalt won’t drop and you’ll waste time.

Mine the Block

Once you’ve got your pickaxe, start mining. Here’s the control for each version:

  • Java Edition: Left click and hold
  • Pocket Edition: Tap and hold
  • Xbox One: Press and hold RT
  • PlayStation 4: Press and hold R2
  • Nintendo Switch: Press and hold ZR
  • Windows 10 Edition: Left click and hold

Keep mining until the block breaks. One basalt block will drop into your inventory.

Grab It Before It Disappears

Pick up the basalt quickly. It won’t stick around forever. Once you have it, you can use it right away for building or smelt it for other variants.

What to Make With Basalt

Basalt is good for building and decoration. You can smelt it to create polished basalt, which has a smoother appearance. Polished basalt can then be crafted into smooth basalt for columns and detailed walls. It fits great in Nether-themed builds or modern designs.
