What is a Custom Shield?
Custom shields are shields decorated with banners. You craft them by combining a regular shield with any banner to add color, patterns, borders, stripes, gradients, and more. The shield still protects you from damage while looking exactly how you want it.
Materials You Need
Shield
You’ll need one shield. If you don’t have one, you can craft it with wood planks and iron ingots.
Banner
You’ll need one banner in any color. Banners are crafted from wool and sticks. You can make them in white, orange, magenta, light blue, yellow, lime, pink, gray, light gray, cyan, purple, blue, brown, green, red, or black.
How to Craft a Custom Shield
Step 1: Open Your Crafting Table
Place down a crafting table and right-click it to open the 3×3 crafting grid.
Step 2: Place Shield and Banner
Put your banner in the left slot of the middle row and your shield in the center slot of the middle row. That’s it. No other items needed.
The grid should look like this:
- Row 1: empty, empty, empty
- Row 2: banner, shield, empty
- Row 3: empty, empty, empty
Step 3: Grab Your Custom Shield
Your new custom shield appears in the output slot. Click it to grab it and add it to your inventory.
Making Different Designs
Any banner will work, and you can apply different banner patterns before combining them with your shield. Make your banner with stripes, crosses, checkered patterns, or gradients. Then combine it with the shield to get that exact design on your shield.
Enchanting Your Custom Shield
You can add enchantments to custom shields using an enchanting table or anvil:
- Unbreaking – Makes your shield last longer before breaking
- Mending – Uses experience points to repair your shield when it takes damage
- Curse of Vanishing – Your shield disappears when you die instead of dropping
Using Your Custom Shield
Equip your custom shield in your off-hand (secondary hand) to start blocking. Hold right-click to raise it and reduce damage from attacks and projectiles. Your shield will take damage over time and eventually break if used frequently, but you can repair it with another shield on an anvil.
