Nausea Status Effect – How It Works

The Nausea effect is one of Minecraft’s status effects that distorts your vision and makes the screen wobble around. It feels like the world is spinning and you’re about to throw up. Not fun, but useful to know about if you’re exploring the ocean or messing with commands.

What Does Nausea Do?

When you get hit with Nausea, everything on your screen warps and twists. The higher the level, the faster and more intense the effect. Your vision wobbles so much that it becomes hard to see straight or navigate. Purple particle effects float around you while it’s active.

Nausea comes in different levels: Nausea I, II, III, and beyond. Each level makes the screen distortion worse and faster. At level 255 (max), the wobble is intense enough to make most players want to clear it immediately.

Status Effect Icon

When Nausea is active, you’ll see a small icon in the top right corner of your screen. In older Minecraft versions, the icon only shows up when you open your inventory. In newer versions, it’s always visible in the HUD.

The purple particles swirling around you are the visual giveaway that you’re nauseous. Once the effect wears off or you drink milk to clear it, the icon and particles disappear.

How Long Does Nausea Last?

The duration varies depending on how you get the effect. To check how much time is left, open your inventory and look at the status effect list. It shows minutes and seconds remaining.

If you eat raw pufferfish, you’ll get Nausea along with other negative effects for about 15 seconds. Commands can set the duration to anything you want, from a few seconds to way longer.

How to Get Nausea

Raw pufferfish is the main way to get Nausea naturally. When you eat one, you get Nausea plus Hunger and Poison. It’s one of the worst things to eat in Minecraft.

The other way is with commands if you’re running a server or in creative mode.

For maximum Nausea (level 255):

/effect clear @p

Older Minecraft Versions (1.11 and 1.12)

The syntax was slightly different in older versions. To give Nausea:

/effect @p nausea 99999

Nausea II:

/effect @p nausea 99999 1

Clear all effects:

/effect @p clear

Tips for Dealing With Nausea

If you accidentally eat pufferfish or get hit with Nausea, drink a bucket of milk immediately. That clears all status effects at once.

The effect is completely harmless aside from making it hard to see and navigate. It won’t kill you or cause damage, just makes everything spin. If you’re testing maps or pranking friends on a server, Nausea is a solid choice because it’s annoying but not actually dangerous.
