Amethyst shards are useful materials you can get from amethyst clusters deep underground. They’ve been in the game since the Caves & Cliffs update. You can’t craft them, so you need to find them in the world.
What Are Amethyst Shards?
Amethyst shards are drops from fully grown amethyst clusters. When you break a cluster, you get 4 shards plus some XP. They stack up to 64 and work in a bunch of crafting recipes.
Finding Geodes Underground
Amethyst clusters grow inside geodes. Geodes generate underground in the Overworld, sometimes at the end of cave systems or just buried in stone. They’re not super rare, so you’ll find them if you do some mining.
A geode has three layers. The outside is tuff. The middle layer is calcite. Inside, you get the good stuff – blocks of amethyst and budding amethyst blocks with crystal growth on them.
The 4 Growth Stages
Amethyst grows in stages on budding amethyst blocks:
- Amethyst Bud (small) – the first stage
- Amethyst Bud (medium) – getting bigger
- Amethyst Bud (large) – almost ready
- Amethyst Cluster – fully grown and ready to mine
Only the fully grown amethyst cluster drops shards. Break the smaller buds and you get nothing, so wait for them to fully grow if you want the loot.
How to Mine Amethyst Clusters
Break the cluster with any tool or even your fist. It takes a moment to break, so hold down the button and be patient:
- Java Edition: Left click and hold
- Pocket Edition: Tap and hold
- Xbox One: Press and hold RT
- PlayStation 4: Press and hold R2
- Nintendo Switch: Press and hold ZR
- Windows 10/11 Edition: Left click and hold
When it breaks, 4 amethyst shards drop on the ground. Pick them up quickly before they disappear.
What to Make with Amethyst Shards
Here’s what you can craft with them:
- Block of Amethyst (combine 4 shards in a 2×2)
- Tinted Glass (useful for decoration and blocking light)
- Spyglass (for looking at distant things)
- Calibrated Sculk Sensor (tech stuff for redstone)
Version Compatibility
Amethyst shards are available in:
- Java Edition 1.17 and later
- Bedrock Edition 1.17 and later
- All newer versions up to the current release
