What is the Plains Biome in Minecraft?
The Plains biome is one of the first biomes you’ll encounter in Minecraft. It’s a flat, grass-covered landscape with occasional trees and bodies of water. If you’re looking for a good place to build, find villages, or gather animals, Plains is usually a solid choice.
Plains Biome Features
Terrain and Weather
Plains are flat with minimal elevation changes. You’ll find grass blocks covering most of the surface, with gravel patches scattered around. The weather is normal – you’ll get rain and occasional thunderstorms like most biomes.
Vegetation
Flowers are everywhere in Plains. You’ll see azure bluets, dandelions, oxeye daisies, sunflowers, and cornflowers. Pumpkins spawn naturally too, so it’s a good place to farm. However, there are no trees in pure Plains – that’s one of the main features.
Blocks You’ll Find
On the surface, you get grass blocks, dirt, and gravel. Dig down and you’ll eventually hit the standard ores like coal, iron, gold, and diamonds. Lapis lazuli ore is more common here than some other biomes. Bee nests spawn occasionally if you’re looking for bees.
Animals and Mobs
Plains spawn plenty of passive mobs during the day. You’ll find cows, sheep, pigs, horses, donkeys, chickens, and bees. Villagers spawn in Plains villages naturally. At night, hostile mobs show up like creepers, skeletons, zombies, spiders, endermen, and witches.
Villages
This is the big one. Plains biomes frequently generate villages. These have houses, farms with wheat/potatoes/carrots, and villagers you can trade with. It’s one of the best biomes for finding early-game resources and starting your adventure.
Biome ID
In Minecraft Java Edition (versions 1.16 to 1.20+), the Plains biome ID is:
minecraft:plains
Use this with commands like /locatebiome minecraft:plains to find Plains biomes near your spawn.
