Diamond Ore: Find & Mine in Minecraft

Complete guide to finding and mining diamond ore in Minecraft. Learn the best Y-level, required tools, and Silk Touch tips.

Diamond ore is one of the most valuable blocks you can find in Minecraft survival mode. It doesn’t spawn anywhere except deep underground, and you can’t craft it either. You have to go out and mine it yourself.

Where to Find Diamond Ore

Diamond ore spawns between Y-level 16 and Y-level -16 in most biomes. Your best bet is to dig down to around Y-level 12, where you’ll find them pretty consistently. The deeper you go (down to about Y-level -16), the more diamond ore you’ll encounter, but you’ll also run into more lava and hostile mobs.

Look for the distinctive blue-grey speckled block. It stands out from most stone, so once you know what to look for, you’ll spot it easily enough.

How to Mine Diamond Ore

You Need the Right Pickaxe

This is the tricky part: a wooden or stone pickaxe won’t work. You need at least an iron pickaxe to break diamond ore. If you want to keep the ore block itself (not just get the diamonds), you need to use Silk Touch enchantment on your pickaxe. Any of these work:

  • Iron pickaxe with Silk Touch
  • Diamond pickaxe with or without Silk Touch
  • Netherite pickaxe with or without Silk Touch

The Mining Process

Once you have the right pickaxe, just left click (or hold RT on console) on the ore block and wait for it to break. It takes a bit longer than breaking other blocks, so be patient. A single diamond ore block will drop when it breaks.

Without Silk Touch, mining diamond ore gives you raw diamond items instead of the ore block. With Silk Touch, you get the actual diamond ore block, which you can place anywhere or smelt later.

What Drops When You Mine It

  • With Silk Touch: You get 1 diamond ore block
  • Without Silk Touch: You get 1 raw diamond (the item)

The raw diamond can be smelted in a furnace to get a regular diamond. Most players prefer using Silk Touch if they want to collect ore blocks for building or later smelting.

Item ID and Commands

If you want to use commands to get diamond ore, here’s what you need:

For Minecraft Java Edition 1.13 and newer:

/give @p diamond_ore 1

For Minecraft Java Edition 1.8 through 1.12:

/give @p 56 1 0

The Minecraft ID name is minecraft:diamond_ore and the legacy numeric ID is 56.

What You Can Do With Diamond Ore

You can smelt diamond ore in a furnace or blast furnace to get raw diamonds, which you then craft into diamonds (yes, that second step is required). From there, diamonds are used to make the best tools and armor in vanilla Minecraft, like diamond pickaxes, diamond swords, and diamond armor.

Many players also keep diamond ore blocks for decoration or storage purposes, especially if they’re rich in diamonds.
