What is the Forest Biome?
The Forest is a lush biome found in the Overworld. It’s one of the most common biomes you’ll encounter when exploring, covered in tall grass and filled with trees. Forests are known for having lots of wildlife, including the rare wolves that spawn here.
Forest Features
Trees
You’ll find three types of trees in the Forest biome: oak, birch, and spruce. Oak trees are the most common, but birch and spruce mix in to add variety. The trees are often tall and dense, making forests good places to gather wood early in a new world.
Plants and Flowers
Forests have lots of ground vegetation including dandelions, poppies, lilacs, and rose bushes. The tall grass is everywhere, so you’ll get plenty of seeds when you break it. These flowers are useful for decoration and for getting seeds.
Blocks You’ll Find
The surface is grass blocks with dirt underneath. If you dig deeper, you’ll hit the standard Minecraft blocks: stone, coal ore, iron ore, gold ore, diamond ore, redstone ore, and copper ore. Nothing unique down there compared to other biomes.
Animals and Mobs
Passive Mobs
Forests spawn chickens, cows, sheep, and pigs like most biomes. But Forest is one of the only places where wolves naturally spawn. Wolves are the big draw here if you want to tame dogs with bones.
Hostile Mobs at Night
When it gets dark, you’ll find the usual hostile mobs: creepers, endermen, skeletons, spiders, witches, and zombies. Nothing exclusive to forests, but they show up plenty once the sun sets.
Weather
The Forest biome has average rainfall. Rain and thunderstorms happen about as often as they do in other temperate biomes. No drought or excessive rain to worry about.
Biome ID
Minecraft Java Edition
If you need to use commands or mods that reference biome IDs, the Forest biome ID is:
minecraft:forest
This ID works in Java Edition versions 1.16 through 1.19.2. Use the /locatebiome minecraft:forest command to find the nearest forest from your location.
Forest Seeds
Want to spawn in a Forest? Use one of these seeds to create a world where you start in or near a Forest biome. Different seeds will put you at different spawn locations within the forest, so try a few if you want a specific setup.
Java Edition Seeds
Popular forest seeds for Java Edition include variations that spawn you with forests nearby for easy wood gathering early on.
Bedrock Edition Seeds
Bedrock players have their own set of forest seeds that work with Bedrock Edition worlds.
Tips for Forest Survival
- Wood gathering: Forests are ideal for getting lots of wood fast. The trees are tall and plentiful.
- Finding wolves: Explore multiple forests if you want to tame dogs. Wolves aren’t guaranteed in every forest.
- Navigation: Forests can be dense and disorienting. Mark your path with torches or wood blocks so you don’t get lost.
- Mob spawning: The tall trees can make it dark on the ground even during the day. Watch out for mobs spawning in the shade.
