Sugar cane is one of those items you can’t craft or smelt. You just have to find it growing in the world and pick it up. It’s pretty common once you know where to look, and it’s a key ingredient for paper, books, and sugar.

How to Get Sugar Cane in Survival Mode
Sugar cane grows naturally near water. You just need to track down a plant and break it. Here’s how it works:
Step 1: Find a Sugar Cane Plant
Look along the edges of rivers, lakes, swamps, and beaches. Sugar cane grows right next to water on dirt, grass, or sand. It’s usually 1 to 3 blocks tall and bright green, so it’s pretty easy to spot.
Step 2: Break the Sugar Cane
You don’t need any tools. Just attack the bottom block or any block in the stalk and the whole thing above it drops. Here’s what button to use depending on your platform:
- Java Edition (PC/Mac): Left click and hold
- Pocket Edition (PE): Tap and hold
- Xbox 360 / Xbox One: Hold RT
- PS3 / PS4: Hold R2
- Wii U / Nintendo Switch: Hold ZR
- Windows 10 Edition: Left click and hold
- Education Edition: Left click and hold
The cane breaks into individual pieces and floats on the ground for a few seconds.
Step 3: Pick It Up
Walk over the sugar cane pieces to collect them. They’ll go straight into your hotbar. Don’t walk away before grabbing them since dropped items despawn after 5 minutes.
Item ID and Name
Sugar cane’s internal name changed in 1.13 when Mojang flattened all the item IDs:

What You Can Make with Sugar Cane
Sugar cane is used in a handful of crafting recipes. The main ones:
- Sugar – put one sugar cane in any crafting slot. Used for cakes, potions, and food.
- Paper – three sugar canes in a row gives you 3 paper. Paper is what you need to make books, maps, and banners.
- Compost – sugar cane can go in a composter at a 50% chance of raising the compost level. Not the most efficient use, but handy if you have excess.
If you’re planning to use a lot of paper (for bookshelves, enchanting, cartography), setting up a sugar cane farm is one of the best early investments in the game. The plants grow on their own next to water, so all you need is a flat area, water channels, and some patience.
