Respawn Obelisks replaces the bed-based spawn system with a new one built around obelisks you find out in the world. Right-click an obelisk to set your spawn. Keep it charged, or face the curse. It’s a small mod that changes how survival actually feels, especially in the later game.
How It Works
Beds no longer set your respawn point by default (you can re-enable that in the config). Instead, you find obelisks, right-click them to bind your spawn, and keep them fueled with ender pearls and eyes of ender. Every time you die and respawn at one, it loses some charge. Let it drain completely and you get the Immortality Curse, which strips away hearts. After 5 curses, the next respawn sends you straight to world spawn instead.
Place a beacon directly under an obelisk and it gets infinite charge. That’s the goal for a permanent, safe home base.
Where to Find Obelisks
- Overworld: Villages and small structures that generate in plains biomes.
- Nether: Blackstone shrines spread throughout the nether.
- End: Wild end ships drifting around the outer end islands.
Each type only works in its own dimension. Use the wrong one and it explodes, just like sleeping in a bed in the nether.
Moving and Setting Up Obelisks
Breaking a found obelisk drops a “dormant obelisk.” On its own it does nothing. Check JEI to see the recipe to reactivate it.
Obelisks also need a core to function. Wild obelisks already have cores installed. Right-click an obelisk with a core to insert it. Shift-click with an empty hand to remove it. There’s no way to craft new cores, so be thoughtful about how you use the ones you find.
You can upgrade the maximum charge a core holds. Check JEI for the upgrade paths.
Features
Charging
Right-click the obelisk with a valid charging item. All accepted items show up in JEI. Ender pearls and eyes of ender are the main ones. Beacon underneath gives infinite charge.
Immortality Curse
Respawning at a drained obelisk applies the curse. Each level removes one heart, stacking up to 5 times. On the sixth attempt, you’re sent to world spawn.
Obeliskbound Enchantment
Items enchanted with Obeliskbound have a chance to survive death and be restored when you respawn at an obelisk. Three levels, each giving a 25% chance per item. You can’t get this enchantment from an enchanting table or villager trades by default, but both of those restrictions are configurable.
Pet Revival
Bind a pet or passive creature to an obelisk core. When that entity dies, a totem icon appears above the obelisk. Use a totem of undying on it to respawn up to 3 bound entities at once. Not every entity can be bound. The config holds a whitelist of supported ones, and most passive creatures are on it by default.
Teleportation
Place a lodestone under an obelisk and bind a recovery compass to it. The compass then lets you teleport back to that obelisk.
Redstone Support
Obelisks output a comparator signal based on current charge level. Point the comparator at the bottom half of the obelisk.
Other Details
- Shift + scroll the mouse wheel while looking at the bottom half to change which side of the obelisk you respawn on.
- Rename the core in an anvil to display a custom name floating above the obelisk.
