Where do I find Sniffer eggs?

Sniffer eggs are found in chests inside underwater ruins. They don't show up every time, so you may need to loot a few ruins before finding one.

Can you tame a Sniffer?

Yes. Feed them flowers and they'll become tame. It works the same way as the vanilla mechanic Mojang added in 1.20.

What do Sniffers drop?

They sniff the ground and dig up ancient seeds. These are seeds for plants that don't generate naturally anywhere else in the game.

If I update to 1.20, do I still need this mod?

No. The Sniffer is built into vanilla 1.20 and up. This mod is only for players on 1.19.3 or older who want the mob without updating.

Does this mod work with other mods?

Generally yes. It doesn't touch much beyond adding the new creature. If you run into conflicts, it's usually with mods that heavily change ocean biomes or mob spawning.

Sniffer Mod (1.19.3, 1.18.2) - Mob Vote 2022 Creature

The Sniffer won the 2022 Mob Vote but didn’t make it into vanilla until 1.20. If you’re on 1.19.3 or 1.18.2 and don’t want to wait, this mod backports it. Same creature, same mechanics, works right now on your version.

To get one, search chests in underwater ruins for Sniffer eggs, bring the egg to dry land, and wait for it to hatch. They’re big, slow, and completely passive. They wander around sniffing the ground and drop ancient plant seeds you can’t find anywhere else.

What the Sniffer Does

Behavior

Fully passive, won’t attack anything
Roams and digs up ancient plant seeds from the ground
Can be tamed by feeding them flowers
Lays eggs in water when breeding

Getting One

Finding a Sniffer isn’t instant. You’ll need to track down underwater ruins in ocean biomes, loot the chests inside, and hope for a Sniffer egg. Bring it to the surface and wait for it to hatch. It’s a bit of a hunt, but it makes them feel earned.
