How to Enchant a Shield
You can enchant a shield using the /enchant command. The command looks like this:
/enchant @s unbreaking 3
In this command, @s targets yourself, unbreaking is the enchantment name, and 3 is the level. You need to be holding the shield you want to enchant.
Example: Enchanting with Unbreaking III
If you want to give your shield Unbreaking III:
/enchant @s unbreaking 3
This will add Unbreaking III to the shield in your hand, making it take less durability damage when you block with it.
Example: Combining Enchantments
You can apply multiple enchantments to one shield by running multiple /enchant commands:
/enchant @s unbreaking 3 /enchant @s mending 1
Now your shield has both Unbreaking III and Mending, so it lasts longer and repairs itself with XP.
Best Shield Enchantments
Unbreaking III is the most useful enchantment for shields. Since shields take durability damage when you block, Unbreaking makes them last way longer in combat.
Mending is also valuable because it lets your shield repair automatically when you collect XP. This means you never have to replace it if you’re actively playing and collecting experience.
Curse of Vanishing is mostly a downside. Your shield disappears when you die, so you lose it permanently. Only use this if you want the challenge.
Shield Durability Basics
Shields have 336 durability points. Every time you block damage with a shield, it takes durability loss. A shield with Unbreaking III takes about 3 times longer to break because the durability loss is reduced.
Without Mending, you can repair a damaged shield on an anvil with another shield or with the Mending enchantment.
