How to Get Cactus in Minecraft 1.20+

Find and mine cactus in Minecraft deserts. Learn where to find them, how to harvest safely, and what to craft with cactus blocks.

Cactus is one of those items you can’t craft. You find it growing in deserts and have to mine it yourself. Here’s how to get cactus and what you can do with it.

Finding Cactus in Your World

Cactus only grows in hot, dry biomes. Look for it in:

  • Desert – Most common place to find cactus
  • Badlands – Also spawns here frequently
  • Eroded Badlands – Rarer but possible

Cactus blocks grow as tall green columns. You’ll spot them pretty easily once you’re in a desert. They’re often scattered around on the sand.

How to Mine Cactus

Here’s the thing about cactus: it damages you if you touch it. So you can’t just run up and punch it. Break it from a distance using a tool or your hand. Any tool works, but an axe is fastest.

The cactus will break into pieces and drop on the ground. Pick them up before they disappear. You can stack cactus up to 64 in a single slot.
