Enchanted Iron Boots Guide – How to Enchant

Learn how to enchant iron boots in Minecraft using an enchanting table. Complete guide with all enchantment options and step-by-step instructions.

How to Enchant Iron Boots in Minecraft

Iron boots are solid armor, but they’re even better when you add enchantments. You can throw Feather Falling on them to reduce fall damage, or use Depth Strider to move faster underwater. This guide walks you through the whole process.

What You Need

To enchant iron boots at an enchanting table, grab these items:

  • 1 pair of iron boots
  • 3 Lapis Lazuli

That’s it. The lapis lazuli gets consumed when you enchant, so make sure you have enough. In Creative mode you can skip the lapis lazuli.

Step 1: Open the Enchanting Table

Right-click your enchanting table to open it. You’ll see two slots and a list of enchantments on the right side of the screen.

Step 2: Place Your Items

Put the iron boots in the first slot and 3 lapis lazuli in the second slot. You’ll see up to 3 enchantment options appear on the right.

Each enchantment shows a number next to it. That number is the experience level requirement to see that enchantment. Higher level requirements mean better enchantments. You don’t need XP to unlock them all at once, but you do need the specified level to choose that option.

Step 3: Pick Your Enchantment

Hover over an enchantment to see its full name and cost. Click whichever one you want. Your boots will glow purple and the enchantment applies immediately.

Tip: The enchanting table often adds extra enchantments you didn’t ask for. You might end up with 2, 3, or even 4 enchantments on a single pair of boots.

What Enchantments Work on Iron Boots

Enchantment What It Does
Feather Falling Cuts fall damage and teleportation damage
Depth Strider Move faster underwater
Frost Walker Freeze water to walk on it, or walk on magma blocks without taking damage
Soul Speed Move faster across soul sand and soul soil
Protection Reduce damage from attacks, fire, lava, and falling
Blast Protection Reduce explosion and blast damage
Fire Protection Take less damage from fire and lava
Projectile Protection Reduce arrow and fireball damage
Thorns Damage attackers when they hit you
Unbreaking Boots last longer before breaking
Mending Use XP to repair the boots
Curse of Binding Can’t remove the boots once equipped
Curse of Vanishing Boots disappear when you die instead of dropping

Iron Boots Durability

Iron boots can take 195 hits before they break. That’s pretty decent compared to leather (65 hits) but not as good as diamond (429 hits) or netherite (481 hits).

Adding Unbreaking helps them last longer. Combined with Mending, your boots can basically last forever if you pick up the XP.

Best Enchantments for Iron Boots

For survival mode: Feather Falling is the MVP. Falling kills more players than anything else, so reducing that damage saves your life constantly. Pair it with Protection or Unbreaking and you’re golden.

For water exploration: Depth Strider lets you move at normal speed underwater instead of crawling. Game changer for underwater mining or exploring ocean temples.

For the Nether: Fire Protection or Blast Protection keep you alive when things get hot. Soul Speed on soul sand makes traversal way faster.

For late game: Mending turns your boots into a permanent item if you farm XP. Pop on Unbreaking III and your boots never break again.

Using Your Enchanted Boots

Just equip them like normal boots. They go in your armor slot at the bottom right of your inventory. Enchanted armor gives no stat boost over regular armor, but the enchantments apply their effects immediately.

Bootable Alternative Methods

You can also enchant iron boots using an anvil with enchanted books, or use commands like /enchant @s feather_falling 4. The enchanting table is the most reliable way to find good enchantments though.

FAQ

Can I combine two enchanted boots on an anvil?
Yes. Put two enchanted boots in the anvil and it merges the enchantments. It costs XP but you keep all the effects.
Why aren’t my enchantments showing?
Make sure you have enough lapis lazuli in the second slot. Also check that you have the required experience level to see that enchantment.
Do I lose the boots if I enchant them?
No. The boots stay in the enchanting table slot and you keep them. You just spend the lapis lazuli and some XP.
What’s the difference between Curse of Binding and Curse of Vanishing?
Binding means you can’t take the boots off once you put them on. Vanishing means they disappear when you die instead of dropping on the ground.
