How to Get Blue Ice in Minecraft

Learn how to craft and mine blue ice in Minecraft. Find blue ice in frozen oceans or make it with 9 packed ice.

What is Blue Ice?

Blue ice is a denser, slippier version of packed ice that you can find in frozen biomes. It’s useful for building fast travel corridors with boats since it reduces friction even more than regular ice. You can either craft it at a crafting table or grab it straight from the world if you have a Silk Touch tool.

How to Mine Blue Ice from the World

Where to Find It

Blue ice spawns naturally in frozen and deep frozen ocean biomes. If you’re looking for it, head to areas with lots of ice and snow.

Getting the Right Tool

This is important: blue ice normally drops nothing when you mine it. You need a tool with Silk Touch to pick it up as a block. Any of these work:

  • Pickaxe (any material)
  • Shovel (any material)
  • Axe (any material)

Iron or better is recommended since they’re faster, but any tool with Silk Touch gets the job done.

Mining It

Hold down your mine button and wait for the block to break. The timing is the same as regular ice. Once it breaks, pick up the blue ice before it despawns.

Other Blocks That Need Silk Touch

Blue ice isn’t the only block that needs Silk Touch. Ore blocks, grass blocks, mycelium, coral, and a bunch of other stuff also require it if you want to keep them intact. Check the crafting guides for those if you need them.
