Minecraft 1.21.2 Snapshot 24w40a
Snapshot 24w40a is here with a bunch of cool stuff. Mojang is calling this one “Bundles of Bravery,” and it brings experimental features that are coming in the winter update. You can turn these features on and test them out right now.
What’s New in This Snapshot
Pale Garden Biome
The Pale Garden is a spooky variant of the Dark Forest. It’s got its own unique look and feel:
- Pale Oak trees grow here instead of regular dark trees
- Pale Moss and Pale Moss Carpet cover the ground
- Pale Hanging Moss hangs from the Pale Oak foliage
- No passive mobs spawn naturally here, which makes it feel isolated and creepy
- New ambient sound effects that fit the spooky theme
- Creaking Heart blocks generate inside the Pale Oak trees
Pale Oak Trees
These are the main tree type in the Pale Garden. The Pale Oak logs can be crafted into a full wood set, just like any other tree type:
- Planks, Logs, Stripped Logs, and Wood blocks
- Doors, Trapdoors, Fences, Fence Gates
- Stairs, Slabs, and Pressure Plates
- Signs and Hanging Signs
- Buttons
- Boats and Boats with Chests
Pale Oak Leaves drop saplings that you can plant in a 2×2 pattern to grow new trees.
Pale Moss Blocks and Carpets
Pale Moss is a new decorative block that generates naturally in the Pale Garden. The moss carpet is interesting because it grows on solid faces of blocks that border it. Bonemealing moss carpet makes it spread further and cover more surfaces.
Pale Hanging Moss
This hangs down from Pale Oak foliage naturally. It won’t spread on its own, but you can bonemealing it to make it grow downward.
The Creaking Mob
This is the creepy centerpiece of the Pale Garden. Here’s how it works:
- Spawns at night in Pale Gardens from a Creaking Heart block
- If you look directly at it, it freezes and won’t move
- It can’t be damaged normally and won’t go through portals
- When you hit it, a particle trail shows the connection to its Creaking Heart
- If you destroy the Creaking Heart block, the Creaking mob disappears
- Wearing a carved pumpkin on your head lets you look at it without it freezing
Creaking Heart Block
The Creaking Heart is a special block that generates inside Pale Oak trees. It’s surrounded by logs and spawns the Creaking mob at night. During the day, it goes dormant. When the Creaking gets hit, it sends out particles showing the connection back to the Heart block.
Other Changes
- Bundle and Shulker Box coloring now uses actual Dye items instead of uncolored bundles
- Dyes won’t color items that are already that color
- New accessibility option to make block outlines more visible
- Realms now shows the game mode of your last active world on the main screen
