How to Craft Red Sandstone Stairs in Minecraft

Red sandstone stairs are solid building blocks that let you create stairs and slopes with that nice red desert aesthetic. They’re perfect for desert bases, southwestern architecture, or any build where you want that warm, sandy look.

The recipe gives you 4 stair sets at a time, so you can build tall structures without needing to craft over and over. These work in all modern Minecraft versions and stack up to 64 in your inventory.

What You Need

To craft red sandstone stairs, you only need one material:

  • 6 Red Sandstone blocks

Red sandstone is easy to find in desert biomes. Just look for those reddish rock formations and mine them with a pickaxe.

How to Craft Red Sandstone Stairs

Step 1: Open Your Crafting Table

Place down a crafting table and open it. You’ll see the 3×3 grid where the magic happens.

Step 2: Arrange the Red Sandstone

Place your 6 red sandstone blocks in this pattern:

  • First row: 1 block in the first slot
  • Second row: 1 block in the first slot, 1 block in the second slot
  • Third row: 3 blocks across all three slots

This staircase pattern is what makes the recipe work. The arrangement has to match exactly or you won’t get the stairs.

Step 3: Grab Your Stairs

Once you’ve got the pattern right, 4 red sandstone stairs appear in the output box. Drag them into your inventory and you’re done.

Version Info and Item IDs

Java Edition (PC/Mac)

The item ID is red_sandstone_stairs

In versions 1.13 and up, use this command to get them:

/give @p red_sandstone_stairs 1

For older versions (1.8 through 1.12), the command is:

/give @p red_sandstone_stairs 1 0

Placement and Properties

Red sandstone stairs act like any other stair block. You can place them to face different directions and flip them upside down for custom architecture. They have a stack limit of 64 and won’t burn in lava.

Use stairs on slopes, roofs, or decorative details. They pair well with regular sandstone, smooth red sandstone, and terracotta for cohesive desert builds.
