Minecraft 1.19 Snapshot 22w11a is dropping with a ton of new stuff to explore underground. You’re getting frogs that actually work like real mobs, tadpoles that grow into different types of frogs, a creepy underground biome called the Deep Dark, and more. Let’s go through what’s new.
New Features in Snapshot 22w11a
Deep Dark Biome
The Deep Dark is a new biome you’ll find way underground. It’s dark, eerie, and doesn’t have any regular mobs spawning there. The whole floor is covered in Sculk blocks. It’s designed to be unsettling, and honestly, it works. The real danger comes from the Warden mob that shows up if you make too much noise with Sculk Shriekers.
Frogs and Tadpoles
Frogs are an actual mob now. They jump, swim, walk on land, and croak. They also eat small slimes and drop slime balls, which is useful. If they eat small Magma Cubes, they drop Froglights instead. Each frog variant drops a different colored Froglight block that works as a light source.
Tadpoles are baby frogs that spawn in water. They swim around, and if they end up on land they jump like fish until they die. When they grow up, they become frogs based on the biome they were born in (Cold, Temperate, or Warm). You can catch tadpoles in a bucket and move them around.
Mangrove Wood
Mangrove is a new type of wood with a full set of blocks. You get mangrove logs, stripped logs, wood, roots, doors, trapdoors, signs, stairs, slabs, fences, buttons, and pressure plates. There are also mangrove leaves and propagules. Propagules are basically saplings that grow under mangrove leaves. Bonemealing leaves will make new propagules grow. You can break off fully grown propagules and plant them like normal saplings.
Mud and Mud Bricks
Mud is a new block that generates in the upcoming Mangrove biome. When you walk on it, you sink down a bit like soul sand, but without the slowness effect. You can make mud by using a water bottle on dirt. Mud bricks are crafted from packed mud and work as a building block. You can turn them into stairs, walls, and slabs with a crafting table or stonecutter.
Sculk Blocks
The Sculk family of blocks lives in the Deep Dark. Here’s the breakdown:
- Sculk Catalyst: This block spreads Sculk patches when mobs die nearby. Mobs that die near it don’t drop experience.
- Sculk Blocks: When mobs die near a Catalyst, the blocks underneath turn into Sculk. Sculk charge spreads and can grow Sculk Sensors.
- Sculk Veins: These grow on the edges of Sculk patches. They can be placed in any direction like Glow Lichen and can spread underwater.
- Sculk Shriekers: Grow rarely from Sculk Catalyst charge. They make noise and attract the Warden. You need Silk Touch to mine them without losing them.
Soul energy spreads through Sculk blocks and veins and decays over time. It decays slowly near the Catalyst but faster away from it. If charge spreads far enough from the Catalyst, it can grow a Sculk Sensor instead.
3D Directional Audio
A new sound option lets you enable 3D Directional Audio simulation. It works best with headphones.
