What is Arrow of Swiftness?
Arrow of Swiftness is a tipped arrow that gives the Speed effect when it hits a player or mob. The speed boost lasts for 1 minute and increases movement speed by 20%. You craft 8 of these arrows at a time, making it easy to stockpile for PvP or mob farms.
What You Need
To craft Arrow of Swiftness, you’ll need:
- 8 Arrows (regular arrows)
- 1 Lingering Potion of Swiftness (2:00 Speed)
The lingering potion is the key ingredient. You can brew this using a speed potion and dragon’s breath, or find it in certain loot chests.
How to Craft Arrow of Swiftness
Step 1: Open Your Crafting Table
Place down a crafting table and open it. You’ll see the 3×3 crafting grid.
Step 2: Arrange Your Materials
Place your materials in this exact pattern:
- Top row: 3 arrows
- Middle row: 1 arrow, then the Lingering Potion of Swiftness, then 1 arrow
- Bottom row: 3 arrows
The lingering potion goes in the center. Get the pattern wrong and nothing happens, so double-check before you craft.
Step 3: Grab Your Arrows
Once the pattern is set, 8 Arrow of Swiftness appear in the output box. Click them to move them to your inventory.
Tip: Hover over arrows in your inventory to see their effect. The tooltip will show “Arrow of Swiftness” and the duration.
Finding Arrow of Swiftness in Creative Mode
In Creative mode, you can grab these arrows directly from the inventory:

Item ID and Commands
For Minecraft 1.13 – 1.20
Use this command to give yourself Arrow of Swiftness:
/give @p tipped_arrow{Potion:"minecraft:long_swiftness"} 1
The item ID is minecraft:tipped_arrow with the potion tag set to minecraft:long_swiftness. You can stack up to 64 of these.
For Minecraft 1.9 – 1.12
If you’re on an older version, use this command instead:
/give @p tipped_arrow 1 0 {Potion:"minecraft:long_swiftness"}
Data value is 0 for tipped arrows. Stack size is still 64.
How to Use Arrow of Swiftness
Use them like regular arrows: equip a bow, draw it back, and fire. When the arrow hits, the target gets the Speed effect for 1 minute. This works on both players and mobs.
They’re useful for:
- PvP matches where speed is an advantage
- Mob farms where you need mobs slowed or sped up
- Pranks on other players (speed them up without warning)
- Speedrunning challenges
