Underwater Biomes Mod for Minecraft
This mod adds a whole new survival experience to your ocean exploration. You get new underwater biomes, research stations to loot, and a progression system that feels like Subnautica. Instead of just swimming around aimlessly, you’re working toward unlocking better gear, oxygen tanks, and eventually fighting bosses. It’s a proper adventure mod, not just a biome pack.
What This Mod Actually Does
The core idea is simple: you crash-land on a water world and need to survive. You start with an oxygen tank and a spaceship, then gradually unlock new recipes and tech by gaining knowledge. There are four knowledge types: Chemistry, Biology, Physics, and Occult. Different crafting recipes need different knowledge levels before you can make them.
Main Features
The Advancement and Knowledge System
You can’t just craft anything once you know the recipe. You need to unlock it first in the new advancement system. Vanilla recipes still work without unlocking, but all the new stuff is locked behind knowledge points. You earn knowledge by:
- Getting a blueprint fragment every morning (right-click it for free points)
- Crafting new items three times to unlock one knowledge point
- Looting research station chests
- Exploring new biomes for the first time
Some recipes need multiple types of knowledge, so you can’t just spam one type. Higher tier gear requires more knowledge points but they don’t get consumed when unlocking.
Oxygen and Temperature
You start with one oxygen tank and it doesn’t last forever. Deeper you go, the faster it drains. You need to unlock better tanks through the advancement system. Refill at the Oxygen Holder on the escape shuttle wall.
Temperature is another survival mechanic. You cool down in the water, faster in deeper areas. Cold resistance from equipment helps, but you can’t ignore it. Keep an eye on your temperature meter or you’ll freeze.
Research Station Ruins
These generate randomly throughout the ocean like villages. Each one is different and filled with chests. You can find supplies, blueprints, and rare loot. Some rooms are packed with chests, some have none. Deeper biomes have larger ruins with better blueprints. The blueprints are valuable because they unlock recipes without needing knowledge points.
Starting Out
Create a survival world and choose WaterWorld as the world type. You’ll spawn near a spaceship with a driving recorder that marks the escape shuttle location. From there, explore at your own pace and unlock whatever you want first. If you load it in a regular world, the new biomes generate but the special mechanics don’t activate.
Beginner Tips
- Unlock underwater torches first. Some biomes are pitch black even during day.
- Craft a knife and kill fish to harvest corals, then turn them into sticks and planks.
- Get the leather suit early. It’s the best cold resistance option and you can craft it easily.
- Unlock the temperature meter so you can see how close you are to freezing.
- Electric torches are cool but they cause lag on weaker PCs because of the moving light source.
What You Need
