Poison Status Effect in Minecraft
The Poison effect is a status effect that damages your health over time. It’s one of the more unique effects because it won’t actually kill you, which can be useful to know when you’re dealing with poisoned mobs.
What Does Poison Do?
Poison deals damage every 1.25 seconds and turns your health hearts a yellowish-green color. Here’s the key thing: the poison effect stops when you hit 1 health point (half a heart). If you heal above that while still poisoned, the damage starts again. So technically, poison can’t deliver the killing blow.
You can get different levels of poison, like Poison II, Poison III, and higher. The stronger the level, the faster it damages you.

How to Spot Poison
You’ll see a poison icon in the top right corner of your screen when the effect is active. The icon looks like a purple smiley face. You’ll also see green particles floating around your character.
When it wears off, the icon and particles disappear and your hearts go back to normal red.
To check how long the poison lasts, open your inventory. The effect will show the remaining time, like 3:15 for 3 minutes and 15 seconds.
Which Items Give Poison
Several food items and weapons apply poison:
- Spider Eye

- Name: Poison (minecraft:poison)
- ID: 19
- Available in: Java Edition 1.8 and later
How to Apply Poison with Commands
Use the /effect command to give yourself or other players poison. Here are the current command formats for modern Minecraft:
Poison (Level 1):
/effect give @p poison 99999
Poison II (Level 2):
/effect give @p poison 99999 1
Poison (Highest Level):
/effect give @p poison 99999 255
Remove All Status Effects:
/effect clear @p
The number after the effect name is the duration in seconds. 99999 gives you a very long poison effect. You can adjust this to whatever duration you want.
For Minecraft 1.11 and 1.12:
/effect @p poison 99999
/effect @p poison 99999 1
/effect @p clear
How to Remove Poison
The easiest way to remove poison is to drink milk. Any type of milk bucket will clear all status effects including poison. You can also use the /effect clear command if you’re in creative mode or have command access.
