What Are Foxes?
Foxes are passive mobs in Minecraft that spawn in cold and forest biomes. There are two types: red foxes and snowy foxes. They’re one of the few mobs you can actually tame, making them great companions if you know how to find them.
Fox Stats
| Type | Passive Mob |
|---|---|
| Health | 10 health points (5 hearts) |
| Attack Method | Will never attack you |
| Drops | Whatever they’re carrying in their mouth (emerald, feather, egg, leather, etc.) |
| Experience | 1-3 XP when killed |
| Special Skill | Can be tamed to become your companion |
Where to Find Foxes
Foxes are nocturnal and more active at night. You can find them in specific biomes depending on the type:
Red Foxes
Spawn in Taiga, Old Growth Pine Taiga, and Old Growth Spruce Taiga biomes.
Snowy Foxes
Spawn in Snowy Taiga and Grove biomes.
If you’re having trouble finding them, you can use a spawn egg or summon them with a command.
Fox Behavior
Are Foxes Aggressive?
No. Foxes are completely passive and will never attack you. If you attack one, it’ll just run away. You’re safe walking near them.
What Do Foxes Carry?
Foxes naturally spawn with items in their mouth like emeralds, feathers, eggs, leather, cooked porkchops, wheat, rabbit hide, or rabbit’s feet. They’ll also pick up any items they find on the ground. When you kill a fox, it drops whatever it was carrying.
Fox Types
Both fox types are functionally identical. The only real difference is appearance and where they spawn.
Red Fox
Orange and white coloring. Found in warm taiga biomes.
Snowy Fox
White coloring with darker markings. Found in snowy and grove biomes.
How to Tame a Fox
Taming foxes requires a specific setup:
- Find two foxes in their natural biome
- Give each fox sweet berries or glow berries
- Wait for them to breed
- The baby fox will be automatically tamed to you
Once tamed, your fox will follow you and attack hostile mobs that attack you. This makes them useful for combat situations.
Breeding Foxes
To breed foxes, you need sweet berries or glow berries. Give berries to two foxes near each other and they’ll breed. Their baby will spawn as a tamed fox if you were the one who gave the berries.
Spawn Eggs
You can spawn foxes directly using Fox Spawn Eggs in Creative mode or with commands. This is faster than finding them naturally if you just want to experiment.
Commands
Summon a Fox
Use this command to spawn a fox at your location:
/summon fox ~ ~ ~
You can customize this with NBT tags to set properties like type, sitting state, and taming status.
NBT Tags (Java Edition)
If you’re using commands, here are useful NBT tags for foxes:
- Type: “red” or “snow” for fox type
- Sitting: 1 or 0 to make the fox sit or stand
- Trusted: Player name to tame the fox to a specific player
Seeds with Foxes
If you want to find foxes quickly, use a seed that spawns you near a taiga or grove biome. Popular seeds usually have good fox spawning areas that players have documented.
Tips for Finding Foxes
- Search at night. Foxes are more active after dark
- Look in taiga biomes first. They’re the most common spawn location
- Bring sweet berries. You’ll need them if you find foxes and want to breed them
- Be patient. They don’t spawn super frequently
