Chisels & Bytes is an addon for the Chisels & Bits Mod. It lets you take your detailed C&B blocks and designs and export them as 3D print files for the OpenComputers Mod 3D printer. The whole thing runs client-side, so no server setup needed.
Why Use This Addon
The 3D printer in OpenComputers can do some things C&B blocks can’t. Here’s what you get when you export:
- Two-state designs: Your 3D prints can switch between two states. Want a door that actually opens? A switch that toggles? A button that responds? You can set that up.
- Light emission: Print any block with built-in light, no matter what texture you started with.
- Custom collision: Set collision detection for each state separately, giving you full control over how players interact with your creation.
- Backwards compatible: The OpenComputers 3D printer exists in Minecraft 1.7.10, so you can port your C&B designs back to older versions (within limits).
How to Use It
The mod is straightforward to use:
- Hold a Chisels & Bits block in your hand
- Press Page Up (or the Next key, configurable) to copy the design data to your clipboard
- Paste it into the OpenComputers in-game text editor or any text editor outside the game
- Adjust as needed and place the file in your models folder for the 3D printer
If you have another C&B block in your hotbar next to your active item (or in your offhand), it’ll be used as the second state for your 3D print. The latest version also supports fluids with some limitations. Sneak to toggle between still and flowing fluid textures.
Important Limitations
Keep these in mind when exporting:
- The OpenComputers 3D printer defaults to 24 shape maximum. Complex designs will hit this limit. You can increase it in the OpenComputers config file (maxShapes setting in the printer section).
- Textures may need manual adjustment when porting between versions, especially moving to older Minecraft versions.
- Minecraft 1.9+ removed some color reading methods, so FlatColoredBlocks compatibility requires specific coding. Updates to that mod might break color detection but shouldn’t crash the game.
- Fluid support is limited to either still or flowing texture, not both. Fluids won’t be semi-transparent.
- Designs are supported for export but rotation gets ignored. Negative designs are disabled as they don’t add useful information for 3D prints.
