The Allay is a helpful utility mob added in the Wild Update. This guide covers everything you need to know about finding, using, and spawning Allays.
What is an Allay?
Allays are small, blue, passive mobs that look similar to Vexes but are friendly and helpful. They can be given items to hold and will automatically collect matching items from the ground nearby, bringing them back to you. They’re one of the most useful utility mobs in Minecraft.
Allay Stats
| Hostility | Passive |
|---|---|
| Health | 10 hearts (20 health points) |
| Drops | None |
| Damage Immunity | While holding an item (from liked player only) |
| Special Ability | Collects items matching what it holds |
Where to Find Allays
Allays spawn naturally in two locations. They’re typically found trapped in cells or cages, so you’ll need to break them out.
Woodland Mansions
Allays spawn in jail cells inside Woodland Mansions. These cells are made with cobblestone blocks, contain a cauldron and brown carpet, and have an iron door. Woodland Mansions are found in Dark Forest biomes.
Pillager Outposts
You’ll find Allays locked in wooden cages outside Pillager Outposts. These cages are made from dark oak fence, logs, and stairs. Pillager Outposts spawn near villages and can appear in any biome.
Spawn Rates
Allays spawn in groups of 1-3 mobs. You can summon them instantly with a spawn egg or command instead of searching for them naturally.
Allay Behavior
Allays have unique behaviors that make them stand out from other mobs.
Item Collection
Give an Allay any item by using it on the mob with the item in your hand. The Allay will then collect all matching items within a large radius and bring them to you. It can hold up to a full stack of items at once.
Following Your Player
Once you give an Allay an item, it becomes “liked” to you and will follow you up to 64 blocks away. The Allay constantly drops collected items around your location.
Note Block Behavior
If an Allay hears a Note Block play, it will temporarily make that Note Block its favorite for 30 seconds. The Allay will go to the Note Block and drop items there instead of following you. Place wool blocks between the Note Block and Allay to prevent this behavior.
Removing Items
Interact with an Allay using an empty hand to take back the item it’s holding. Once you remove the item, the Allay is no longer liked to you and won’t follow.
How to Use Allays
Allays are perfect for automating item collection in farms and builds.
Farm Automation
Use Allays in crop farms, mob farms, and mining operations. Give an Allay the item you want it to collect and let it gather drops automatically. This saves tons of time on large farms.
Building with Note Blocks
Set up a Note Block as a collection point. Allays will hear it play and drop items there instead of following you. Great for organizing multiple collection systems in one area.
Mining Helper
Bring an Allay into mining operations to automatically collect all the ore or material you’re looking for. No more running around picking up drops.
