The Stony Peaks biome is one of Minecraft’s most resource-rich mountains. Learn what you’ll find there and how to use it to your advantage.
About Stony Peaks
Stony Peaks is an Overworld biome added in Caves and Cliffs Part II. It’s defined by massive stone mountains and is packed with valuable ores. If you’re looking for a mining location early game, this biome delivers. You’ll find iron, copper, and coal on the mountainsides, plus all the deep mining ores if you dig far enough.
Weather
Stony Peaks gets regular rain and snow. The precipitation is average for a mountain biome, nothing extreme. Expect normal day and night cycles with the usual storm weather patterns.
Trees
No trees grow in Stony Peaks. It’s completely barren of wood and leaves.
Vegetation
You won’t find any vegetation here. No grass, flowers, or crops naturally spawn in this biome.
Blocks Found in Stony Peaks
The main blocks you’ll encounter:
- Stone (the bulk of the biome)
- Diorite (decorative stone variant)
- Coal Ore (common on mountainsides)
- Iron Ore (abundant on the surface and mid-levels)
- Copper Ore (frequently exposed on steep slopes)
- Calcite (white mineral found in peaks)
- Dirt (some patches at lower elevations)
Dig deeper into the mountain and you’ll hit all the standard ores: gold, diamonds, redstone, and more. The exposed ore on the surface makes this a great biome for early-game mining without needing to dig deep first.
Mobs in Stony Peaks
Stony Peaks spawns the standard Overworld mobs. At night you’ll see creepers, zombies, skeletons, spiders, witches, and endermen. Nothing unique to the biome. During the day it’s safe to roam (aside from the occasional creeper spawn).
