The Sanity: Descent into Madness Mod adds a fresh mechanic to Minecraft that tracks your character’s mental health. Just like hunger and health, sanity is a bar you need to manage. Let it drop too far and things get weird fast. Your screen starts losing color, mobs act different, and hallucinations start attacking you.
What Drains Your Sanity
A bunch of activities will chip away at your mental health:
- Getting hungry or eating bad food
- Getting soaked by water
- Standing near insane players
- Taking damage
- Hanging out in darkness
- Being around hostile mobs
- Having your movement blocked or restricted
- Hearing creepy sounds and melodies
- Breaking infested blocks
- Trampling farmland
- Hurting animals
- Your pets dying
- Teleporting between dimensions
- Getting struck by lightning
- Provoking Endermen
The longer you ignore sanity, the more your world loses color. Everything becomes desaturated and gray. It’s actually pretty unsettling to watch your vibrant world fade away.
Hallucinations and Mob Behavior
This is where it gets intense. As your sanity tanks, your own mind starts attacking you through hallucinations. These aren’t just visual glitches either, they’re actual mobs spawned from your fears that will try to kill you. The line between what’s real and what’s in your head gets blurry real fast.
Regular mobs also change how they act based on your sanity level. A low sanity means more aggressive and unpredictable encounters. Even peaceful mobs might turn on you if you’re unstable enough.
How to Stay Sane
Good news, there are plenty of ways to keep your mental health up:
- Staying well-fed
- Spending time with pets or other players
- Listening to calming music
- Walking on dirt paths and carpets
- Sitting near campfires
- Getting sleep
- Fishing
- Hatching chickens from eggs
- Wearing a garland
- Earning advancements
- Breeding and shearing animals
- Trading with villagers
- Eating healthy food
- Planting flowers
The easiest option is crafting a garland. Just grab eight small flowers from around you and place them in a 3×3 crafting grid with the center empty. Wear it and your sanity drain slows way down.
Customization Options
One of the best parts of this mod is how configurable it is. You can tweak almost everything to match your playstyle. Want a harder mental challenge? Crank it up. Prefer something chill? Turn it down. It’s all in the config.
