What is Respiration?
The Respiration enchantment is one of the most useful helmet enchantments in Minecraft. It lets you breathe underwater for much longer and improves your vision while submerged. If you spend a lot of time exploring underwater temples or just want to stay underwater without drowning, this enchantment is essential.
Respiration Enchantment Details
Enchantment Name: Respiration
Max Level: Level 3 (Respiration III)
What It Does: Extends your air supply underwater. Also improves underwater visibility.
Applies To: Helmets (Leather, Iron, Diamond, Golden, Netherite, Chain, Turtle Shell)
How to Get Respiration
You can add Respiration to a helmet three different ways:
1. Enchanting Table
Place a helmet in an enchanting table and spend your lapis lazuli. You might get Respiration as an option, though it’s not guaranteed.
2. Anvil
Combine an enchanted book with Respiration on your helmet using an anvil. This is the most reliable way if you have the book.
3. Command
Use the /enchant command to instantly add the enchantment.
Enchant Commands
If you want to use commands to add Respiration to a helmet:
/enchant @p respiration 1
That gives you Respiration I. Replace the 1 with 2 or 3 for higher levels:
/enchant @p respiration 2 /enchant @p respiration 3

How to Use Your Enchanted Helmet
After you get a helmet with Respiration, you need to wear it. Move it from your inventory to your helmet slot at the top of your inventory screen. Your character will visibly put on the helmet, and you’ll immediately get the effect.
Now you can breathe underwater for much longer. Each level of Respiration adds more air supply. Respiration III gives you the maximum underwater breathing time.
